As you can see, it's just a simple mistake. Court de Gébelin (or was it his friend de Mellet?) decided that this must be right, as it made more sense than the original....

Thanks for finding that image. It made me dig deeper and I found this image from his Monde Primitif Vol. 9.(attached below)

Having the traitor stand upright undoes all the meaning associated with St. Peter being crucified upside down (if in fact that was what earlier artists had in mind).

I don't get Etteilla... yet. Could be a touch of brilliance there, but he seems sooooo random.
