40 shades of gray ....
Just a note - several people pm'd me about the RWS copyright and such. I am not a lawyer and I can't answer the questions ... I can only give my opinion!
A E Waite died in 1942 + 70 years = 2012
Pamela Coleman Smith died in 1951 + 70 years = 2021
USG could claim there are 9 more years until the illustrations go into the public domain.
Whenever Rider & Son became part of Random House Waite's heirs sold the copyright to them, so it can be argued that the original copyright holders sold their rights away. USG bought them in 1971, I think? All very complicated and gray-area legal stuff.
So, rather than wait until 2013, or 2022, or even 2042 (!), I am going to do my own illustrations. If for some reason the RWS illustrations go public next year I will insert them into my book and use my created ones for my men's book only.
