hmmm.... perhaps you're right.

It was not only contentious to write that, but why complexicate ( ) what is in essence far simpler and straight-forwarder...

I temporarily withdraw my 'proto-TdM-I' classification...

Looks like I am slumming here.
Yep. Giant purple box. Sleazy purple "spreadcloth" inside. I trimmed mine, too. But gold-painted backs and squared corners sound just fab! Can you show us?

Slumming is good.

I'm nit-picking... In what sense do you mean 'best' and 'top'

Top, most important for study:

Noblet

Dodal (is available but you need to pay a lot)

Conver

~

Top, preference for reading with:

Noblet

Grimaud

~

Top, for intrigue and quirkiness:

Vieville

This way I get to mention five decks.

Now now. The most wonderfully quirky TdM-related deck is unquestionably the magical, revealing, and amazingly delightful Jacques Vieville Tarot; but we're not allowed to mention this spectacular deck in this thread, are we?

My list:

Bill's Tarot. I don't have it. I love much about it, and especially the colors. If I met any of those people I'd go running in the other direction. Now THAT'S tarot! Scans are at the tarotgarden.com site

Major Tom's. I have the new Schiffer press printing and I love it. I HAVE met these people--some hang out in that odd little pub downtown, and the others were at the annual Company Picnic. We get along, although I don't always take their advice. http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards...ex.shtml#cards

Jacques Vieville's. The old man did the best he could, with help from God-only-knows how many friends, to make a Marseille deck. It's not his fault if we don't wanna call it that. http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards...le-marseilles/

As long as I'm at it:

I also love the Hadar, for its clean lines and classy colors, http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/hadar-marseilles/

and the Chat du Marseille, for capturing exactly what one needs to know about the intersection of Trumps and Cats, http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/chat-du-marseille/

and the Vandenborre Bacchus, which has such exuberance that it kicked out the dour cards in favor of a swashbuckler and a tipsy pal, http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/flamand/

and I've got 10 cards from an old Conver deck which I love and relate to, as they're in rough shape.

My feelings exactly. I'd add a third deck, the Piatnik to my reading decks. It is a fit hunk of tarot - very sensual to shuffle - the thickness... the size... the weight... Ahh...

And the reproduction quality is amazing. I wish they'd do the Heron Conver this well.

Cheers,

This is my first choice!

Camoin Bicentennial (Thunderbay Press)
Noblet (Flournoy)
Grimaud (1963)

I've been lazy and have not done my history homework so I just get to mention the decks I happen to like the most:

Grimaud (actually I prefer my mini )
Véritable Tarot de Marseille by Hadar
Fournier

I used the

Hèron TdM pretty exclusively (for TdM readings) before I got the

Flournoy Noblet 78 card deck which I just love. I love everything about it!

The LS Universal TdM (so shoot me, I like it)

Noblet (absolutely love it)
Fournier (love the softer look and colour schemes)
Hadar (traditional looking, but nicer colours)

I find all of the above to be equal for reading decks.
