I wasn't sure which way this was going, whether toward reading or history, so I held off posting this.

It's an article by Michael J. Hurst which seems to have disappeared from the Web. It's an historical analysis that borrows heavily from Tea Prentice. I think it's primarily educated guesswork but interesting nonetheless.

It's been awhile since I've looked at it and haven't given it a serious edit so it may contain a few typos.
