3 Cups = friends? Or something more?

Biba28

Hi,

I'm always having trouble with this card and wonder if you guys can help me out. I've read such diverse meanings as friendship, girly get-togethers (b*tching when reversed), and general party situations, to marriage, official celebrations i.e. christenings, to even consummating a relationship in a very tangible sense ;)

Can someone give me a hand with this one? If you got it in a reading asking whether someone has romantic feelings at the moment for you, what would you interpret that as?

I find it very ambiguous :S

I think it would depend on the deck. I would read a Marseilles 3 Cups quite differently to the RWS euivalent.

i personally havent seen a 3 of cups i see as romantic at all, the only romantic sense i can see is if they are multi-dating, or someone is getting engaged. most imagery in 3 of cups is a group of women together, or a group of men, its also one of the few cards to depict just women.

If it came out in a romantic reading for how someone saw me, i would say they saw me as a friend, or a friend with benefits...but nothing more.its not a romantic card to me, and i wouldnt see that they saw me as g/f potential at all.

i think the big way to differenciate the celebration meanings of the card, are to say if you in your relationship are settled and have been for awhile, then engagement could be the meaning, but if you have just started dating someone, its likely not to be that meaning.

I have not seen this card come up as celebration often, i usually see the 4 of wands for that, i do however see the 3 of cups come up for when a friend gets engaged or married, this has happened a few times

Hi,

This deck is RWS.

I've had this one come up for someone who was similarly attracted to (in love with) two different people at the same time but opted to remain friends with both so as not to lose either one of them. But, of course, not always meaning that...

Having just met, i wouldnt say its romantic, more along the lines of really enjoying the get togethers. Possibly someone who really enjoys the company of women full stop. Its all about socialising, fun and games. Party while the party is happening, living in the moment, not looking towards the future in the slightest. I see it more as being engaged with what the moment brings.in the "just met" context anyway.

This card is about enjoying the company of others. In the context of romance, I would say this is more about having fun than anything, enjoying your time together. It is about levity, and so can be very pleasurable, but if you are looking for passion or a depth of feeling, it is not there yet.

Yes it can be confusing cos it can mean both

cosmic tarot 3 of cups shows a couple in love.

It depends on situation cos 3 of cups could show romantic feelings if you have already surpassed 2 of cups stage and things have developed further like someone else already said.

this is when you have to use cards, intuition and common sense

*DOES IT,I'D SAY THAT WAS MORE FITTING TO THE 2CUPS IN THAT DECK

I wouldn't say 'in love' as such, more like a mutual trust/respect between them,(and isn't that what real friendships are supposed to be all about)2 people that look extremely comfortable with one another, and yet they don't even face one another, not like in the 2cups image anyway, that's more the 'in love' look IMO,just the way hes holding her face in his hand. (I'd post a link but I don't know how to ).

with the RWS deck by itself: nothing more than friends: celebrating, enjoying friendships, valuing community, working together, uniting. Although 3 follows 2, it is not a continuation or progression of card #2. Two's company, Three's a crowd.
