Decks for Children?

Mystic Zyl

Gypsy Witch was my first deck, my parents bought it for me, it was $1.00 at the liquore store. Inner Child is a cool deck for kids. I have an old RWS deck i let my clients kids play with while I give the parents a reading; that way they do not feel left out.

My daughter, who's now 14 has been playing with tarot cards for most of her life... She doesn't really read them but she likes to make up stories with them.
She's used Hanson Roberts, The Fey Tarot, The Rabbit Tarot, The Tarot of the Magical Forest and her favourite is the Alice In Wonderland anime deck (it has nothing to do with Alice in Wonderland) but is a lovely RWS clone in an anime style: http://mangaart.com/wp/alice-in-wonderland-tarot-by-ceng-xiaojing/

For readings she loves the Oracle of Light and Shadow - very teen-girly and it has a great book too: http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/oracle-shadows-light/
The Alice in Wonderland Tarot looks quite cute. Adorbs, in fact. I've been wanting to see a fully-illustrated anime/manga Tarot for children for some time now.

Mini-decks. They're easier to handle.

Children hate being babied. My first encounter with Tarot was when I was about eight or nine, with a mini-Rider-Waite. Half a century later, I'm hooked. It's not bad for kids.

Decks for children

Some nice ones for children are the "8 Bit Tarot" by Indigo Kelleigh, which is a nice looking RWS clone on the smaller side with Nintendo-era looking graphics. Nice card stock & finish. http://www.etsy.com/listing/91502445/8-bit-tarot-deck

The "Tiny Tots Tarot" is a gentle spirited deck with very child-like art. It, like the 8-Bit is every bit a RWS clone, made "cuter" in this case for kids. I, personally, don't care as much for the background colors on the cards. Some of the blue backgrounds drown out the black writing, and the colors don't seem to have a uniformity to them.... But it's a good shot at rendering the tarot for little people. https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/tiny-tots-tarot

One of my favorites - and my 9 year old daughter's favorite is the 1960 Merrimack Publishing "World's Tiniest Tarot Set", which is the traditional RWS deck but in ultra small dimensions. It's got some interpretive wording, like the larger Merrimack decks did and is somehow available fairly easily right now.... Beware of ebayers trying to ask $50+ on these decks right now.... Someone has found a box, perhaps? http://www.ebay.com/itm/380654989627?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Hooked on Tarot generally not RW, I hasten to add. :)

I think these decks are good for children

My daughter has her own copy of the mini-sized Hanson-Roberts, just the right size for small hands (she's five). She started with the pocket Universal Waite, another great size.

My little one also has their own deck. {Asked for it when they were 4}. It is a pocket sized Rider-Waite. We also have a pocket sized Universal Waite. Those are perfect for their hands and they have their very own special cases. Also happened to get Mommy's blue padded TarotTotes bag. :) Easy to get in and out of by themself.

They also read the cards with Mommy. At first, it started with just looking at them. Then saying what their favorites were. They also would tell me which ones I should avoid, etc. It was cute. :)
Now, they look at the card picture and does a great job of saying what they are. We've talked about relaxing and saying what comes when they look at the picture. Usually just one or two cards as I'm afraid anything else would be overwhelming or bore them. I'm not teaching the book meanings as they seem to already get the meanings.

I also like that they know to treat the cards well, always put them away when they are finished reading, etc.

As stated above, Tarot Nova is a pleasant, mini deck that gets the point across without being jagged. It's not an overly cutesy deck either and the background is black which makes the colorful images stand out more. Would be a good deck for a child who isn't into adorable images but to whom you don't want to provide a dark deck.
