Phoenix: Death or Judgment?

FadeToWhite

I just wanted to thank everybody for their input on this thread. I'm learning a lot, both about the Death and Judgement cards. :)

But could you please clarify on which part of the story each card is associated with?
Death is associated with something that must end so that something else may begin. The old phoenix must die by fire so that the new phoenix can be born.

The depiction of Judgement on most RWS-style decks shows the archangel wakening the dead from their tombs. Yes, they will be judged on their actions during their lives that have just passed and then they will begin the next phase of their existence on another level - either heaven or hell. The phoenix is beginning the next phase of its existence as it rises from the ashes of the old phoenix. But there's none of the "judgment" aspect associated with the phoenix. It's more about the rejuvenation and rebirth aspects of the card.
