The Connolly: The Hermit

Queen of Disks

This Hermit is different then most other Hermit cards out there. Most Hermit cards have the Hermit wandering around alone on his quest for wisdom, the meaning of life, etc. This Hermit has another person with him.

The Hermit is standing on the side of a mountain and is holding out a torch. A man below the Hermit grasps the torch. Often in fairy tales you will have a person visiting a hermit in search of the meaning of life or a piece of information or knowledge he or she needs to complete a journey or a mission. If the person is worthy, the hermit will share that information.

I feel like the Hermit is holding the torch which symbolizes light and wisdom and is handing it down to another person to continue that quest. Or the man wants this wisdom and the Hermit has to decide if the other man is worthy.

Another thing is the purple tulips (crocuses?) that are growing behind the Hermit. These are plants that start growing at the end of winter and the beginning of summer. (Crocuses grow right under the snow.) This symbolizes new life and beginnings. Perhaps the new man is about to start his own quest for wisdom and knowledge, and he may bring new energy and ideas.

The Hermit in this card http://www.tarot.com/tarot/decks/index.php?deckID=67&cardID=9 almost looks like he doesn't want to let go. Does he see life as a challenge, a chance to test himself against others? And the one who reaches for the torch, has he experienced a pivotal moment in his life, an awakening, a new perception, the gift of self worth.

I wonder if this card is about turning over one's responsiblity and letting HIM guide and show what needs to be done?
