Visconti Tarot - Moto?

Wardi7

Does anyone know what the phrase on the pips in the Visconti Tarot means? Tried doing an online search and nothing came up. Any thoughts??

Otello

A Bon Droyt

It is the motto of Sforza family,
it means something like: "a good path", "the right way" or "the good way".

BTW, on 2 of Cups there is "Amor mio", meaning "my love".

Philippe

I think "à bon droit" (french adverb phrase) rather means rightfully or legitimately, a self-assured and proud motto.

In Visconti Tarots: Extrordinary examples of Renaissance art, Tiberio Gonard says it means "a just right."

Oh yes, I like it much more than my previous translation!

Kaplan says it means "To the good belongs the right."

Gonard's interpretation is a lot more eloquent to me. :)

Otello

Well, I think Philippe is right because in Italian, too, "a buon diritto" has the same use of the French "a bon droit".
For instance, it may be the king/duke exclamation, while putting the crown on his own head: "God gave it to me and, a bon droyt - legitimately - I put it on my head".
