tarot art nouveau- the magician

misfitknits

this depiction of the magician is curious to me. there are none of the standard trappings of a RW of TDM magician, no table, no robe, no grandiose gesturing, no lemniscate over his head. he is a rather dionysis man, looking more greek god than magician. the four suite are represented toward the bottom of the card, more like emblems rather than actual objects he would use.

his surroundings are very earthy; vines creating an archway around him, honey-colored background, leaves, flowers. he reminds me more of a pagan "magician" or an earth "magician"- someone in tune with their surroundings, knowing the seasons, celebrating the earth, knowing the animals even able to live among and harmonize with them, some one fluent in astronomy and astrology, he knows the land, like a shaman he is able to infuse healing tinctures, he is studied in the medicinal and healing natures of the plants, flowers- natural remedies.

the lack of physical representation of the suit's objects seems like a reminder that we don't need "magickal" objects to manifest "magick". the magick is within us, it COMES from us. we can create our own real-world magick in our everyday lives. magick is all around us, every second of every day.

so perhaps that is the lesson this magician teaches us and this is what our immature fool has stumbled on the magician for- to learn this. maybe this was divine intervention? just as the snake from adam and eve also lead them to knowledge, it also set in motion a journey of very hard lessons they had to learn.

numerological associations- one: the beginning of the fool's "real" journey, representing that cross-over from child to young adult, set out into the world to find their purpose and make their own way. a new chapter, the fool with purpose.

LWB: ability, astuteness, diplomacy.
