tarot art nouveau- the high priestess

misfitknits

this card sticks a little more to the RW imagery. she's wearing the triple moon crown, she is holding a scroll that says "tora". instead of a veil behind her, her chair is swathed in fabric-absolutely covered in it. instead of one black and one white pillar, we see columns on either side of her. behind her (where the veil would be hanging in the RW) we see something round and purple, perhaps a broken (shattered) circular window, or a stained glass window.

this priestess has a very welcoming look on her face, a very non-threatening pose. without saying a word, she tells us it's okay to approach her, psychically beckoning us to come take a peek into the other world beyond her columns. rather different from the authoritarian body language and feeling of the RW. her dress even has what looks like little arrows pointing towards her and all the hidden knowledge she presides over.

there are some strange things here, also. the fabric that is draped over the high priestess's chair seems to have black hair oozing or growing from it. this could be a warning that our journey into the unknown could be scary at times, or dangerous even. not everything on the other side is all sunshine and rainbows. she presents this matter-of-factly, no holding back, no judgment. also, the "window" behind her reminds me of a port hole for us to peer into the other side, or maybe a portal to actually venture into other worlds. the choice is ours.

astrological aspects: 2- duality, balancing of 2 separate things. she's the gate keeper choosing who can gain access to forbidden, sacred knowledge. and for those who wish to ignore that such things exist, she keeps them on their side and the knowledge and secrets on her side. that could be the balancing aspect of the two.

LWB: study, occult sciences, calm, wisdom

reversed: not wanting to give up ones secrets, hiding things from other people, and also hiding things from ourselves, or choosing not to acknowledge the things we don't want to see.
