The Path of The Emperor

V for Victory

I just looked that up. Apparently, Vadere mecum means "to go with me". Some translations include items that are usually carried around, like an essential iPhone. Hadit can't 'come' to us- because we are carrying him around as part of us... That sounds unfortunately a bit like luggage...
It's the other way round. The mind and body complex that we commonly think of as ourselves is the baggage that Hadit has to carry in his journey of experience through Nuit.

Another bit of latin. Vadit = "He goes".

I suppose a reasonable question is why would Hadit even have a secret name in the first place? My guess is that he can never be known except via his manifestations through Nuit. He is force hidden in form. Just like in the first verse of Liber AL chp.II: "Nu! the hiding of Hadit." This may be why the initial letter of his name is replaced by the letter of Nuit herself - Heh.

Somewhere Crowley mentions a secret form of Abrahadabra in which Vau replaces Heh. ABRAVADABRA.
I've gone through all the likely sources trying to track this one down, but so far nothing. I know I've seen it. I'm starting to suspect it was in one of Crowley's diaries.

In the 25th Aethyr we are told that the Beast has the secret of V and his ten horns spring from five points. V.V.V.V.V.
The ten horns correspond to ten V words:

VIRIDIS, VIRUS, VIR, VIS, VIRTUS, VIA, VITA, VIRTUS, VICTORIA, VERITAS.

Apparently there's an eleventh secret name that has never been revealed. (VADIT ?) But the ten horns can be found at the top of the Lust card. The ten names contain 52 letters in total. 52 is the value of AIMA, the fertile mother. She is AMA(42), the mother, with the fertilizing Yod(10) within her - AIMA.

The Hierophants name is V.V.V.V.V. He is of couse Atu V. On it he makes an inverted V sign with his 'sinister hand' representing the Greek letter Lambda - Λ - which is equivalent to Lamed and card VIII - Adjustment, AIMA - The Woman Satisfied standing between an upright and averse VΛ forming a diamond.
Both Taurus(Hierophant) and Libra(Adjustment) are ruled by Venus.

Glancing through the index to the new Thoth Tarot book by Phyllis Seckler/Soror Meral I noticed an entry for VAD (p.33).
Soror Meral said:
In the old systems of Tarot, the Empress was considered to be the consort of the Emperor, which was then seen as the fourth Trump, directly following that of Venus. The Emperor corresponds to Aires, ruled by Mars, so this seemed perfectly natural as the combination again stressed Mars and Venus. However, in the New Aeon of Thelema, Liber Legis is adamant that She is now the consort of the Hierophant, as above quoted. [AL II:16] The correspondence to the Hierophant is Taurus, ruled by Venus. The letter of the Hierophant is Vau and it's number is six. But do Vau = 6 and Daleth = 4 add to eleven? They equal 10 and one must add the letter of Aleph to make the sum of 11. Thus it is hinted in Crowley's commentary on Liber Legis, that there must be a special magical method in VAD, rather than HAD, for Hadit. These three letters, HAD, are the middle of the word ABRAHADABRA, which is the formula for Thelemic Magick.

Further, if she was the consort of the Emperor, note that Mars would have a double effect, both from its position as the Path of Peh and as the ruler of Aires. Today it is Venus who has the double effect as the path of Daleth and as the ruler of Taurus, equated with the Hierophant. Does this possibly mean humanity will now pay more attention to love than to destruction and war?
The Beast on which she rideth has 10 horns springing from 5 points: V.V.V.V.V.

The Hierophants name is V.V.V.V.V. Maybe the Hierophant represents an eleventh secret horn corresponding to the secret name of VAD. Its certainly consistant with the meaning of the letter Vau.

Idle speculation alert! I wonder if the secret horn corresponds to a Baculum; the penile bone found in many mammals (not humans). Could the "secret joke at somebody's expense" be an example of Crowley poking fun at himself by calling himself a "dick" or a "nob head". It would be a typically Crowley-esque bit of humour.

Aeon418

VAD seems to be hidden in plain sight on the Hierophant card.

The Hierophant himself is Vau.

The Child is Aleph.

The Woman is Daleth.

Also the child is wearing a sandal strap. This is a form of the Ankh, the symbol of Life corresponding to the fifth power of the sphinx - IRE, the Power to Go.
Liber AL said:
6. I am the flame that burns in every heart of man, and in the core of every star. I am Life, and the giver of Life, yet therefore is the knowledge of me the knowledge of death.
7. I am the Magician and the Exorcist. I am the axle of the wheel, and the cube in the circle. "Come unto me" is a foolish word: for it is I that go.

That kept me busy this morning for a while, not getting far...

I wondered if those ten words had anything to do with the four sets of verb conjugations with the different endings, a hidden code or something. Vadit is a verb, he/she/it goes. I think they look more like adjectives or nouns.

The translations I got were

Green,fresh youthful
Poison/system
Hero/man of courage/honour
Force/might,strength
Virtue/ mighty works/host/power/bravery
Way
Life
Virtue (repeat)
Victory
Truth.

A common root for the words is is Vir, (the third word) meaning Hero, man of courage etc. Five of them start with this. The word Virtues repeats twice, almost on a bigger scale to Vir the Hero, with hosts, armies, bravery.

The meanings I got for the 5 points of the V's

VI VERI VNIVERSUM VIVUS VICI

number 6
Truth/reality
Universe
Alive/living
Conquer/defeat

Kind of on a similar theme...

VIR

Cont-

Interestingly though, In Liber 231 the mercurial genii of Atu 5 Vau the Heirophant is VUARETZA described as having a secret name following. The corresponding Qliphotic genii is URIENS

Vuaretza could be an anagram of [Adonai] Ha-Aretz. The divine name of Malkuth suggested as the Master of Earth and the realms of matter. This brings to mind the quote you mentioned in the book of the law about Hadit the giver of life and bringer (knowledge) of death- the mortal realm.

VU, (VAU,V) could be swoped in place of the H for Heh.

The Qliphotic name Uriens as another anagram could make VIRENS, which has the VIR root to fit in with the 10 names of the horns. 'Full of youthful vigour' in keeping with the meanings. However, as a secret 11th name it doesn't seem to add anything much☹️

Last hunt, I think I saw a quote from Mathers describing Uriens also known as Oriens one of the four great kings....

The secret name must be Viagra!

But seriously, I'm still mulling this one over. A secret name implies a secret eleventh horn. I thought of the symbolism of the Baculum because card V is Taurus the Bull and the 'phallic' Hierophant. Crowley mentions Pasiphae and the legend of the Minotaur, who is also called "Asterion", meaning starry or star like. This seems to suggest spirit incarnating in matter. But the conception of the Minotaur was a trick played upon Pasiphae by the god, Poseidon.

I need to chew the cud a little longer...

Haha... There seems to be an earlier or parallel myth of the Pasiphae bull legend with that of Europa. Apparently Zeus fell in love with her beauty and transformed into a bull. Europa mounted the bull and was transported across the sea clutching the bull's horn. He then revealed himself to her and she had three sons with him, one was King Minos.

The myth of Pasiphae, wife of King Minos and daughter of Helios, the Sun, on the other hand seems to have brought in the element of shame to the union of divine and human, or in her case divine and beast. This seems to have led to the tragic element of the Minotaur trapped in the labyrinth and his death to end the sacrificial offerings. In contrast again when Europa died Zeus was said to have transformed her into a star complex- Taurus constellation believed to be a form of Zeus.

(One of the 2 Euro coins depicts Europa on the back of the bull)

Oppositorum

This is very interesting and appears to be an example of the Oppositorum that J. Daniel Gunther references this in connection with the Secret of V. The oppositorum is a symbol that features self-contained opposition making a unified whole.

The cards corresponding to VAD (V,0,III) are in one sense or another a union of opposites. (V=Vau/Union, 0=Hermaphrodite, III=Universal Love) The Emperor on the other hand is a pointedly masculine card. This may be one reason why Hadit rejects him in this aeon.

Hadit sometimes describes himself in terms of dual polarities.
Liber Legis said:
26. I am the secret Serpent coiled about to spring: in my coiling there is joy. If I lift up my head, I and my Nuit are one. If I droop down mine head, and shoot forth venom, then is rapture of the earth, and I and the earth are one.
Compare with the following from Liber 66.
Liber 66 said:
34. I who reveal the ritual am IAO and OAI; the Right and the Averse.
35. These are alike unto me.
36. Now the Veil of this operation is called Shame, and the Glory abideth within.
The Thoth Hierophant is good example of this oppositorum. Upright and Averse pentagrams. The Hierophant standing in the pose of Baphomet. The Woman standing before him as Luna to his Sol. The four Kerubic beasts in a new pattern showing the functional opposition of the signs of NOX. The Serpent and Dove seemingly joined together around the oriel as if they were two manifestations of one thing. (for there are love and love. There is the dove, and there is the serpent)

Serpent = NChSh = 358

Messiah = MShICh = 358

Shame = GShNH = 358

Fascinating.

Hiss and Whisper = ShChGh (if I did this part right) = 358
