Hana Fuda & Divination...

Moonbow

Hi Kenji

I also like the Echigo Flowers, and it would be nice to see more images of the Karuta cards. Thanks very much for the ebay suggestion too and I will certainly call on you if I need help, thank you for the offer.

Hi Bernice & Evie,

You can see all the 48 cards of ECHIGO FLOWERS at the following site:
http://stone.web.infoseek.co.jp/echigo-ooishi.html
And many other Hana-fuda variants:

To practice playing Hana-fuda, using game applications would be
a good method. For example, an iPhone/iPad app "HANAFUDA Japan"
enables us to play together on-line, using "Echigo Flowers" images!:)

BTW, I have found a website of a fortune-teller who uses Hana-fuda as a divination tool. I will check it and post afterwards.

Oh Kenji I'm in my element now! :)

I love these links! And the divination one is much appreciated. I've been working on some of my own but they are a bit flat at the moment.

thankyou thankyou thankyou. :)

I think I may have found a problem with the divination method in the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0dwiXVQN-I

I've just done this method and was left at the end of the spread without any cards to read. If I'm following her correctly then you can only read cards where all 4 in the suit are left at the end and I only had 2 of one suit.

Has anyone tried this method?

Moonbow

Its now happened to me twice in a row, I go through the whole deck and have no suits to read. Back to the drawing board, I'll re-watch the video to see where I'm going wrong or if there is a flaw in the system. Disappointing.

Bernice

I haven't tried it. Mainly because it took such a long time and she only seemed to end up reading the animal/top card, so could'nt see the point of fiddling with the rest of the whole deck. Sorry.

Perhaps you could modify her approach? Lay 4 cards then go through the deck matching the seasons to the foundation 4. Even if you only end up with one set, you'll have something.

Bee :)

I wondered if the Mah Jongg method would work seeing as they have multiple cards the same. I'll try that next.

I also thought it a lot of work for just a few keywords to interpret.

Hi:)
I have checked the Hana-fuda divination site I mentioned before.

The webmaster of the site is a Japanese woman, who says she inherited the method from her late father (and he did from his parent.) Unfortunately the information she gives on the site is quite fragmentary, so it is hard to know her whole method.
http://tower8.jp/hanafuda/

It seems that main meanings of each plant are as follows (maybe inaccurate):

JAN(pine)--"MEN"
FEB(plum)--"FAMILY"
MAR(cherry)--"WOMEN"
APRIL(wisteria)--"RELATIONSHIPS"
MAY(iris)--"PERSONALITIES"
JUN(peony)--"SOCIAL MATTERS"
JUL(clover)--"HEALTH"
AUG(pampas)--"HAPPINESS"
SEP(chrysanthemum)--"TROUBLES"
OCT(maple)--"WORK"
NOV(willow)--"CHANGES"
DEC(paulownia)--"MONEY"

And seemingly, high-ranked cards have good meanings and low-ranked cards have bad meanings in general. For example, she says the "BOUZU with the full moon" card has the best meaning of 48 cards.

Hope this helps. (Note again I may be wrong!)
Kenji
