Era of Jewels

The Era cards all contain an item or scene that embodies the essence of the suit. For this woman, the Era of Jewels is something infinitely more precious than gold or silver. She wears as adornment the bones of a human being.

Long before gold, silver, and bronze, we adorned ourselves with the pure colours of the Earth Mother. Black, red, white, and yellow, rich pigments from berries, ash, ochre, and pollen. As these colours all came from within the earth, so too did we use the bones of life for our jewelry. Horn and antler, tusk and hoof, we cut them and cooked them, carved them and polished them, and wore them proudly.

My bone earrings clatter and clack as I move through the motions of a dance of thanksgiving. The skeleton was of an honoured hunter of our clan, who died in combat with an animal. Where the peaceful dead are buried whole, our clan claims the bones of our slain hunters. We adorn ourselves with their remains in honour of the power and accomplishments that their bodies brought us. As they died for us, we honour them in death, that their bones might grant us some of their strength.

Bone jewelry is a constant visual reminder of our own mortality. We are not long for this world, and this world is a struggle, where we must keep our minds and bodies healthy. Bone reminds us that we have much work to do, and every action we take also takes its toll on our bodies, gifts of the Mother. May she grant our noble bones a noble power.
