yes it is high priced because it's unusual and somewhat rare in the jewelry world.

remember that rarity doesn't necessarily mean anything though.
diamonds aren't as rare in nature as the diamond merchants want us to believe.

the mega-companies that control the diamond mines of africa have quite a choke hold on the world market and only allow a small portion of the diamonds mined to actually reach the market (the debeers family owns a huge chuck of the mines and often buys up other finds just to keep them from being exploited and lowering market prices). just as the oil rich nations of the middle east and the cartel they belong to control the price of oil by limiting production.

but ammolite stones are beautiful
