I have found Tarot Tells the Tale: Explore Three-Card Readings through Familiar Stories, by James Ricklef to be an interesting source for developing one's own intuition.
It tutors you gently through familiar stories/situations and helps you become part of the reading; it also gives you the freedom to use whatever meaning a certain card in a certain position you feel resonates with any particular event and see it from different perspectives, by paying attention to card's details, position, and past experiences, while at the same time staying true to the card's basic meaning.
This book will not negate the toothpick method, which I find highly effective in this respect, but it rather helps you in your infantile steps toward trusting your own intuition and will lead you gently toward developing your own insights, that are not etched in stone and will change according to each new reading .
