2 of cups as outward action

The first thought that popped into my mind is he's being deceitful about his feelings.

Another good thought! If he's moving away he has his back to her and she can't see what he's up to.

Ahh, thanks for this other interpretation. I hadn't considered that. 2 of cups is lovely. In this deck also (gilded tarot), the two cups and two female faces looking at each other are prominent. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Interesting take nonetheless.

I have the Gilded Tarot, and the visual picture is starting to get really fascinating.

If I place the 3 of Cups to the left of the 2 of Cups and the 7 of Swords to the right in a kind of progression, it seems like the 7 of Swords man is trying to sneak off the right side of the spread with a furtive look on his face (maybe trying to get away with something?) while she is preoccupied with her friends (3 of Cups). The two swords on the ground almost look like a "decoy" or "red herring" (the illusion of a connection).

If I do the quint, it can be either the Hanged Man (12) or the Empress (1+2=3). Placing the Hanged Man above the 2 of Cups, it suggests the pendulum, and placing the Empress below looks like her foundation. The question, then, is can her personal (animal?) magnetism keep him centered or will he just keep right on swingin'. My guess would be the latter because the Hanged Man is facing in the same direction as the man on the 7 of Swords.

So sorry Barleywine, for some reason I never saw this earlier.

That is such an interesting take. And it resonates with her situation... she split with him and immediately joined our group, we socialise with her and so on. He seems a very confused and conflicted type of person. I think he really does feel he could pick her and drop her whenever he wanted.

Thanks for that, I really appreciate it. Not only to illustrate this reading a little more, but your unique and interesting technique there. I would agree with you. Hopefully eventually he will mature a little tho. Not for her maybe, she's lovely and deserves better anyway.
