Wow! Thanks to all for these replies! As soon as tarotcardrose mentioned the M I looked at the card, and it sure is an M. It's a funny looking W anyway, but I just didn't notice that until mentioned.

I was pretty sure it represented something more esoteric than the 1st letter of Waite's name, and since the card so obviously represents the Holy Grail, I think that must be what's being referenced here. I'm not familiar with the Grail legends (just a child in outer darkness, LOL) so I can't add anything here. But my faith is restored once again that there isn't a brush stroke on the images of the RWS that doesn't have some deeper, more esoteric meaning.

Fascinating! Thanks all for your comments.

Just one last comment.
When life first begins it's heralded by what appears to be a bird that swoops into the body.
Hence the dove holding the disc with the cross . The body of Christ. The cross is the uniting of the male and female forces , the positive and the negitive.
Only at that time, is it said to possess eternal life. The love of God.
The music of heaven is then heard as a tingling of bells or ringing. These are seen hanging under the bowl of the chalice of life.

The whole chalice is held in the right palm of god , or supported by the divine.

The W has traditionally been interpreted as an inverted "M" "W". The way it's drawn is an abbreviation of an ancient Medieval word, 'wis', meaning wise, 'witen', to know, 'wicca' & 'wicce', which were derived from the original root meaning; ie wise, to see, to know. Kinda cool.

Hi- I think the M is for the term "Mass" derived from the late-Latin word missa (dismissal), a word used in the concluding formula of Mass in Latin: "Ite, missa est" ("Go; it is the dismissal").
If you read Waite's The Holy Grail: The Galahad Quest in Arthurian Literature- you will see the quest through the Grail for the Bread of Life (Holy Communion).

Ross' dove in the stem

Its not often I peep into this forum but Ross gave me an idea to play with the images he has shown us :) (see post 8), his discovery seems very likely to me and fits in with Frank Hall's post:

Not sure what all this means but maybe it will raise some more discussion, (and apologies for my amateur drawing skills with Neodraw)

Three W/Ms!

No idea what this might convey - but considering there are supposed to be 'hidden' clues in the images....here's one for sure!

Thanks for doing that Moonbow*!

I don't know what it means either - I think we'll need a Waite-ier opinion on topic. My rough, essentially useless guess, would be that it says something about aspiration, and the hexagram in GD and mystical teachings. But the interplay between W and M I'm not sure of. I can't give a "literal" rendering of the meaning.
