The Rider Tarot Question (no USGames)

Fulgour

Love the one you're with...

The copyright date by US Games of "1971" is bogus,
and we're really just seeing a back-dated legal trick.

A deal between Rider, Muller, Weiser, and Kaplan,
who soon switched to "US Games Systems Inc." to
satisfy documentation requirements, sealed things.

Weiser of New York marketed the Rider Tarot too,
but when the dust settled, Stuart held the reigns.

Lillie

yeah, the 1971 date is a con.
So people ought to be warned it is just a 'when the deck was first copyrighted' sort of thing. Not 'when this particular deck was printed'.

You see the 1972 date with Thoth decks. They are never from then. A thoth deck from '72 would have no date on at all.

Just some deceptive legal trickery.

It's more that US Games "acquired" a piece of paper
somewhere in the mid to late 70s that made it okay
to put a copyright date on the cards, legally 1971...
but the actual rights were just by an agreement for
marketing ~ Rider and Muller said they would play,
and Weiser got squeezed out. I have Weiser Riders
from "1971" or after and they have no copyright...

Lillie

So, like the Thoth, no deck with the date on, is actually from that date?

I am so amused by that.

Stupid legal trickery.
