Golden Tarots

Asenath

I'm one of those people eagerly awaiting the release of the Golden Tarot of Klimt and I'm still trying to decided whether to pre-order or buy (right away) at all. I've got Kat Black's Golden Tarot which only has gold around the edges, so I don't have any worries about ruining the images on the front from use (at least not right away), but from my understanding the GT of Klimt is going to have gold bits on the images???

The question that I have is to those of you with tarots with gold or silver foil on them. Do you use your decks or do you just collect them?

Emeraldgirl

Hi Asenath,

I have the Visconti Tarot with gold foil on them and have never has a problem using them. Also the Russian Tarot of St Petersburg has gold on it and it's fine after use as well (althought I haven't touched it in a few months should probably get around to that soon). I have never found gold wearing off to be a problem but I think it could also depend on the publisher and what methods they use.

There is a difference between the Klimt and the Russian St. Petersburg.
The first has gold foil impressions (like the Nefertari, Visconti, etc...)
The second has gold "paste"... a different kind of graphic gold.

The end result (and cost) is definitely different.

Using Gold Decks

I have used my "Golden Tarot of the Tsar", which is stamped with gold foil on the images, and have never had any problem. I expect the Klimt deck to be similar. Just don't start scratching with your fingernails!

What? No prizes to be won underneith each image? A trip to the Wonka factory perhaps?

I'll try not to. :)

Hi, Asenath!

Have you considered buying a second copy of the deck in
question? I know this can be expensive, but it can also be
a good investment, especially for a collector. Even if you
don't collect decks, I think it is good to have a second
copy of the deck (or decks) you use regularly. This is
especially vital if the decks are OOP, or otherwise difficult
to replace. Then, of course, there is the consideration of
a potentially delicate deck, such as any of those with
gold foil or paint.

I can tell of a good experience with the gold foil type of
deck; a deck which I used more than enough for the gold
to come off, if it was going to. It was the Visconti Gold,
and like Emeraldgirl, I had no problems with it. It was an
asthetically stunning, slippery-shiny, and roughly edged
deck right out of the box, and I did consider keeping it
that way. Instead, I decided to enjoy my VG, and thus I
was able to see that historical decks look much better
when they're not so shiny and new. ;)

So, the VG begged to be my "working" deck, and it quickly
became my all-time favorite. Now, the cards are worn to a
nice matte finish with smooth edges. After six years of heavy
use (and mild abuse), my Visconti Gold tarot deck still
has all of its gold foil. Personally, I think it looks better than
when I first got it.
:)

Oh, and presently, I'm favoring one of those you mentioned,
the Golden Tarot, and I do indeed have a second copy!

Right now I only have the one deck (Golden Tarot). I'm still getting to know it, but I'm trying to decide whether to get the Klimt or not or whether to pre-order or wait for the reviews. Decisions, decisions. There is another deck I want to order, but Klimt is what's making me decide if I want free shipping or not... (I'll save myself $10 on shipping by ordering a $20 deck...makes perfect sense to me!) :p

I use the Visconti Gold

and I really like it--the gold has stood up to long use.

Hope you get the Klimnt deck and report back.
