As someone who has played guitar for about 30 years I can tell you it is my foundation that gives me the freedom to play as I choose and how I choose. I can jam at a local party quite happily or play with some pretty serious studio musicians in reasonable comfort.. The allegory is not perfect, true, but I think it gets the idea of a tarot foundation across ( or many things that are interpretive for that matter). The more you know can sometimes paradoxically lock you in, but normally it free's you to expand your understanding.
But really this is a whole new topic and is not related to the original question, so lets back up 3 or so posts
