The Lover's Path: Five of Coins

Sophie-David

Another wonderfully evocative card, The Lover's Path Five of Coins show Danae and her baby Perseus alone in a winter wilderness, fallen from a life of wealth and ease to poverty and insecurity. A bitter snowstorm swirls around her as she leaves the five coins of material security behind her, pitting herself against the harsh natural elements as she tries to find shelter with her son. The tower of material security in the Four of Coins has fallen, and in her new life she experiences great stress and vulnerability as she exposes her child, her creative work, to the frozen wasteland.

The archetypal starving artist or creative venturer, Danae has exchanged superficial and spiritually deadening security for the beginnings of independence and creative freedom. In this period of adjustment she feels great loss, self-doubt, alienation and anxiety. But this crisis provides an opportunity for a reassessment of her priorities and for the beginnings of social and spiritual maturity. This psychological winter holds the transformative promise of Christmas within its apparent destitution.
