The Gothic Tarot by Vargo – XX Judgement

WolfyJames

Vargo's cards were based on earlier works, you can see some of them on his website. This card is called Lector.

We are in a cemetary here, with stairs going to two arches in the back. Up front is a female ghost, wearing a white dress, looking at a statue at her right. The statue is of an angel, on a pillar with white wings, reading a book. The angel seems to be looking at her, angry. There are two graves there, one in the center, the other one at the left.

It looks like as if the angel, by reading what is written in the book, awoke the dead; here represented by the woman. She seems to be fascinated by the angel, maybe even grateful. After all, her life of wandering would finaly come to a end.

Umbrae

A sleep interrupted.

Is the figure on the right a statue? It looks of stone, except the face – which appears intent, yet passive.

The ghost arises from a grave. As we look at the cenotaph, we know the grave is old – her slumber long. She gazes expectantly, enraptured by the figure on the right; or perhaps his words.

Her expression is the key – to me, is that I can hear her say, “Me? Really?” She is joyful. Her dirt nap is over. She gets to smell the air again.

Judgment

A graveyard, lies within the shadows of a gothic church in ruin. The huge arched entrances still stand as well as parts of the wall. Stairs lead down from the ancient openings and disappear in the fog. A small black metal fence marks the boundary of this old cemetery. A number of grave markers can be seen in the fog. On a pedestal is a statue of an angel who appears to be reading from a book that he is holding out in front of him. A female ghost stands before this statue and looks up as if in great awe. A strange play of light has both the spirits face and the statues face almost glowing, as if there is an implied exchange going on here. Perchance she may soon be free of this forsaken graveyard.

“Being cursed to wander this countryside until the church has crumbled to the earth was bad enough, but this is getting a bit ridiculous.”

The scene between the angel and the ghost put a more personnal touch to this card. As if they will end up talking together. It seems to be that the ghost had been called for a new beginning like having a new goal.
