I'm assuming that there are people on this board who have this deck: http://www.carte-karuta.com/catalog/...&products_id=3 You know me and TdMs... I'm wondering, what is the cardstock/lamination like? Is it highly polished like new decks, or is it more like an old-style, unlaminated finish with heavier cardstock?I've fallen in love with the Heron Vieville, which has heavy stock, is unlaminated, and has square corners. I never thought I'd like a deck like this, but it feels so authentic. I do like the looks of this Piatnik deck, even though it appears to have rounded corners. Thanks!

Hi sravana. I used to have it. The stock isn't like the Vieville, it's thinner and more flexible. I would say the finish is more like satin. It's not high gloss like on some of the newer US Games decks, but it's not like the Vieville either. It's somewhere in between. |

My copy of the Piatnik TdM is on fairly heavy cardstock. I have it in front of me with a Lo Scarabeo deck for comparison and the Piatnik TdM deck is more than 1/4 inch thicker stack than the LS deck because of the thick cardstock. The cards do not have the papery "could draw in them with a pencil" feel of uncoated stock. They are lightly coated but it feels more varnish-y than plastic-y. Definitely not glossy. The corners are just barely rounded. The rounding is not as deep a curve as on modern decks. I suspect that the producers of this deck were very careful to make decisions that people who know about historical decks would be happy with. |

This deck has great cardstock. One of the best. My edition has stiff cardstock. The Vieville is better because itīs so much more subtley stiff (if you know what I mean). The Vieville is almost Meneghello in its style. And that goes for the finish too. It isnīt totally matt like the Meneghellos, but certainly "discreetly" laminated. I donīt use the Piatnik Marseilles as much as I should. Thereīs a slight yellowishness about it, the colouring feels slightly dated, and some of the lines in the woodcut are missing. This should give it an authentic "18th Century" feel but it just makes it feel not very well done. Love the cardstock though Last edited by Le Fanu; 14-10-2008 at 06:05. |

Very interesting, Le Fanu... I see what you mean by "yellowish". ![]() I am having a new love affair with reproductions of old decks that actually *look* old - and after pining for a Dussere Dodal for a while, found that Piatnik deck. I don't think that it's really what I'm looking for, but I'm already in a place where I'm worrying about wearing out my Vieville... then what? Must. find. another....

Hi Sravana. The deck is indeed on the yellowish side, but for me this is not a drawback. It is one of my favorite TdM, and in fact I admire its Hermit best of all the historical decks. I find the cardstock is just right - thick enough to be durable, but still flexible. And the lamination is not overdone at all. I doubt you'd regret adding this deck to your collection. __________________ Thoughts are things And words have wings (Rosicrucian maxim) |

That being said, I suppose I could switch to Flornoy's restoration of the deck if/when it becomes available. But I do my Vieville greatly!! ![]() Quote:
I think that I'm definitely going to get it, eventually - and it's very affordable from Carte Karuta.

Yes, I'm eager for thinbuddha's Payen, too! That is indeed a good price for the Piatnik TdM at Carte Karuta. It's a great site, thank you for posting the link - I've bookmarked it. __________________ Thoughts are things And words have wings (Rosicrucian maxim) |
