Patter: happy to hear you're pulling together a website for the eventual postings! That shows planning and perseverance. re: the layout of the cards. here's my suggestion -- that you provide on the site a template that can be downloaded and printed out. That will serve as a sort of frame for the artwork, and leave an opening for any titles or numbering you think is appropriate. It will unify the inevitably wide variety of approaches! rota __________________ ^^^^the Ator Tarot^^^^ the International Icon Tarot .....and the Prairie Tarot ............................................................................ i was so looking forward so the muted tones of art deco... hmm, i suggest that we first finalize whatever theme we should have and the deck's specifications.

piddly pre planning
I'de like to have a whack at the tower. I think Rota's suggesstion of a frame/template is a good idea. I was going to ask for dimensions so that people will build to the same shape. An example would be to design to allow for people with home printers to scale up to a full 4 pictures a page. Most sheets, I think, can handle 4 4x5 "print areas". The couldn't be 4x5 full inches (2.54 cm to the inch) because you have to subtract some for border and some more for title area. a 3x4 picture area would gbive room for those. Most cards are closer to 2x3 or 3x5 after adding border and titles. At any case I was at a web site for photo graphic printing at home some time ago. Some one did some testing on a few printers to see how low a resolution you could drop to before the picture quality dropped to crap. The lowest you could go, and you'll be pushing it into ugly on some printers, was about 100 dots per inch or 4 dots per mm for people who work that way. I also happen to remmeber that people didn't start talking about "low quality photograph" that their printers could do until the printers got good at 600 dots per inch. Some people are going to print their cards small at 2x3 inches. The finished size might be close to 1.75x2.5 for the picture part. Wheather it is done on the computer or scanned in from another medium, 175 x 250 pixels is the smallest we should work in. If there is any detail it won't scale up and look nice for a larger card at that few pixels. If everyone aimed for 700x1000 pixels on the final file size it would look decent at whatever print size but would still be waaaaay below the pixel count professionals use. Magazines like to work with 48 or 36 hundred pixels to the inch. That is assuming of course that everyone likes those dimensions on picture size and border size and title size. This whole post is just to make you think and not to do your thinking for you. __________________ Juice --have fun --harm none The little deamon complained he was tired of being the lesser of two evils. |

Sorry to have gone quiet but on the weekend my laptop fell of an overhead locker and now doesn't work [!]. The webpages etc were on it and now my main way of accessing the internet is down. Please don't let this stop you! I suggest going with rota's suggestion of an 3x4 picture (750x1000 pix). I will make a border up to give overall 4x5 dimensions. If people would like colour, b/w or greyscale just shout now -- decision will go to the majority. |

Patter, I really liked your hermitress. I did my prelimanary star card design in black and white but can motify it to what ever color scheme the majority votes on. I am a stay at home mom so if you need help with the webpage let me know I have the time. I am not a professional webmaster but can do the easy stuff. I have designed a couple of pages on geocities through the templates, beyond that I am lost. But willing to contribute time and/or support so let me know. Fanci |

Thanks a lot Fanci. I have access to a server but decided I really shouldn't put non-work stuff on it. So I think I will go for a geocities site as they have the least annoying ads -- I could send you the passwords when I do? My dead laptop had my favourite program for making webpages [publisher] but now I only have my desktop at work and so this really limits the time I can spend projects -- I am currently investigating if my laptop can be fixed and should know by the end of the week. As far as my card goes it fails a bit on the 'deco' theme -- not looking very deco to me -- I will have a go at fixing that. |

Card proportions: Most of the decks I use have images that measure 2 and a half inches by 4 and three-eighths inches. I think we ought to use a similar measurement for our art work. (3x4 or 4x5 proportions for cards are just clunky and unattractive to my eye.) It occurs to me to suggest a single piece of downloadable artwork that will serve as a frame for card art. It would have a black frame edge (with the interior white and open for art) and an open panel at the bottom for the card title. If we have the Geocities site mentioned above, this card template could simply be saved to a desktop, and printed out to serve as a frame to work out compositions. I'm guessing Patter, as 'ringleader', can provide this frame artwork for us? __________________ ^^^^the Ator Tarot^^^^ the International Icon Tarot .....and the Prairie Tarot ............................................................................ Ok, Patter, I think your right about the geocities sight it seems the easiest way to go. Sorry to hear about your laptop. With the geocities route everyone involved can get the password and upload their files to it, and if you are designing the site all the files will already be there for you to work with. So, I think first we need to make a list of everyones email address so we can get the site information. UserId and password. So, my e-mail address is: fancimama@hotmail.com Rota, your idea about the size template is perfect. Fanci |
