Song lyrics and card meanings

Quantum James

Being a long-time Dead Can Dance fan - that awe inspiring medieval influenced band most well known in the late 80s early 90s (who sadly split after) - the other day I was doing a reading in which the wheel of fortune turned up and as if by magic the lyrics for "Fortune presents gifts" popped into my head.

It occurred to me that this exactly what this card can be about. It struck me how much more meaning the card suddenly got when looked through the lens of that song - both the lyrics as well as the emotional tenor.

I thought it might be cool to find out what songs other people thought really captured the essence of a card?

Here are the lyrics for Fortune Presents Gifts, from their album Aion:

Fortune presents gifts not according to the book
Fortune presents gifts not according to the book

When you expect whistles its flutes
When you expect flutes its whistles

What various paths are followed in distributing honours and possesions
She gives awards to some and penitents cloaks to others

When you expect whistles its flutes
When you expect flutes its whistles

Sometimes she robs the chief goatherd of his cottage and and goatpen
And to whomever she fancies the lamest goat has born two kids

When you expect whistles its flutes
When you expect flutes its whistles

Because in a village a poor lad has stolen one egg
He swings in the sun and another gets away with a thousand crimes

When you expect whistles its flutes
When you expect flutes its whistles

Well, since I became interested in Tarot, "Don't Fear the Reaper" has become much more significant for me. Same with "Sympathy for the Devil."

As for other cards, I'm not sure. I'd have to think about it more.

"Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi is one of the Kings for me.

yesterday when I was connecting with my cards, there were certain songs that popped into my head when I was using them. it didn't help that my radio was being a little psychic last night as well!

I have the Vanessa tarot so it's always fun to see which songs pop up.

Does the vanessa tarot lend itself well to card-song-association?

Come to think of it, Great Big Sea's recent song "Company of Fools" is the perfect representation of Trump Zero, the Fool. It emphasizes that a "fool" isn't necessarily stupid, and actually has a much, or more, to contribute as the "high society".

Company of Fools

Great Big Sea - Fortune's Favor CD

Bring on the clowns,
The jokers and the fools,
I've had the time of my life
And the life of my times
In the company of fools.

Many a truest word
Has been spoken by the jester
Standing against the tide
Is the noblest of gestures
Little pearls of wisdom that tumble from the light
Can make us laugh until we cry
Because we know that they are right

Within the strangest people
Truth can find the strangest home.
So meet me in the village
Where all the idiots go.

CHORUS
Bring on the clowns,
The jokers and the fools,
I've had the time of my life
And the life of my time
In the company of fools.

Wading through the quicksand
In the gardens of the gentry,
blooming vacuity
Leaves minds and pockets empty.

Now in the social order
I accept the bottom rung
Until the wine is pouring
And the Lord commands a song.

So meet me at the staff door
When the poseurs all go home
We'll gather with the other fools
And put on a proper show.

CHORUS
Bring on the clowns,
The jokers and the fools,
I've had the time of my life
And the life of my time
In the company of fools

(repeat)

So here's to the poorest poet
Who always pens the truth
And the players, writers, gypsies,
And the minstrels and their tunes.
I'd rather live an honest lifetime
With those with nothin to lose
Than waste a night
Knee deep in shite
That's polished slick
To look just right
I'd rather live a lifetime
In the company of fools.

Within the strangest people
Truth can find the strangest home.
So meet me in the village
Where all the idiots go.

CHORUS
Bring on the clowns,
The jokers and the fools,
I've had the time of my life
And the life of my time
In the company of fools

(repeat)

Oh wow thats an excellent example Northern Tigress!

Love the part - "blooming vacuity" sounds like the potentiality of the zero to me. I am off to see if i can buy the song online somewhere...

Interesting, but I think that line was supposed to be an insult against the "gentry" -- pretty boys with nothing in their heads.

Of course, interpretation is what Tarot is all about.

ETA: The album is called Fortune's Favor, and it is available in stores and on iTunes.

The Fool On The Hill

The Fool On The Hill by the Beatles says so much to me about people's perceptions/ prejudices versus Higher Reality & being true to oneself; & the nature of experiencing Beauty & Wisdom.

It has such a lovely, haunting tune too.

I've always associated it with the Tarot!
