The Primary Deck Reflections 2009 Sign-up & Discussion Thread

When I was doing my "Intensive Deck Study," I found that I was less likely to do readings when I limited myself to just one deck. I also considered doing a "Deck o' the Month" study, but thought I would have the same issues there. I cannot be alone in being turned off by this: I love all my decks and I want to give them all the attention they deserve. I mean, really, why else did I buy all of them? To collect dust? No.

Then someone turned me on to a "Primary Deck Reflections" activity that seemed to be the most attractive.

This is a bit different from the other studies that involve one deck. In this one, as it is a "Reflections" and not "Study" per se, one is free to use whatever deck(s) they wish, as long as they commit to reflect at least once a week on the primary deck of their choice.

As this is a group activity, it is preferable that you have a blog or open a Thread here for the specific purpose of sharing with us your personal insights with your deck. As some of our participants may not be Subscribers, could you please post your Threads in the "Your Readings" Forum instead of the "Personal Readings & Exchanges" Forum, thank you.

I will reserve the second post in this Thread for a list of participants.

This is also a year-long activity. Of course you are free to change your PDR deck as much as you want, and you are also free to use any of your other decks as much as you want. We do expect a commitment for 2009.

So, come on, what are you afraid of? Join in on the fun

Ok, I will outline it, then:

  1. Use whatever decks you wish as long as you have a main deck with which you read and post, at least once a week.
  2. Have a blog or open a Thread here for the specific purpose of sharing with us your personal insights with your deck.
  3. Commit to reflecting with this one deck as a year-long activity.
  4. You are free to change your PDR deck as much as you want until you find a deck that agrees with you.

You got it in one lark!!! Yes, KK is a teacher!

And I think I might want to join in with this. hmmm....need to go figure out which deck to be my primary though. Will be back later when I decide.

This is really nice KK. I never could commit to a IDS because I use different decks for different things. But this I can do. Sounds great. I'll be back later with my decision.

I once got in trouble once in the Readings section when I did two readings in the same thread. Have you gotten an okay from the mods for these "year worth of readings" threads?

Hmmm. I think it should be okay since it is one study-reading activity, but I am not a moderator.

Then again, it may be better to start a blog for your readings.

I don't know you sound kind of strict....I'm scared.

I'm thinking about it I'm finally going to go through the whole meditation exercise with Tarot of the Spirit.
Had this deck for years and now it just seems like I'm ready to work with it.
If it doesn't pan out it's "out damn spot" for this deck...so I'm still waffling.
It's so hard...when you have so many decks...there are others I certainly love more and would rather spend the time with...but this one keeps calling my name.
I'm still undecided.

I would like to point out, class, that this is a prime example of who this would be good for. If you can commit to just one reading a week with your PDR deck, then you can screw around with any other decks you want! It is like having an open relationship while being married to one deck! How 1970's.

I'm in. I will be using the Tarot of Dreams.

This should get me over my fear of reading with it. And this works out well since I only want to read for myself with this deck, which is why I can't IDS with it.

Okay, I'm in. Since someone else is doing the Tarot of Dreams, I'll take the Gilded.

Here's my blog space. Edited by moderator: Just click the Website button at the bottom of the post.

Just to be clear, I can post my thoughts ("reflections") on the deck, as well as my readings?

Perfect!

Yes, that would be a good idea to write about your reflections on the deck and not *just* readings, though for some I am sure that the reading part will be easier (and the only thing). And vice versa.

Well you can put me on your list KK. I just have to decide which deck to use. I'm thinking about the Merryday, but want to make sure that's the exact one I want to use for this.

So if you want go ahead put me down for the Merryday but if I change I'll let you know in the next day or so. I've got a head cold right now and am not up to full capacity on thought processes. LOL So I want to give myself some extra time to think about which deck to use.

Not totally sure I understand, but the Your Readings Forum does ask members to keep threads to a single reading, and keep in mind that by posting there you are also open to comments from everyone. No reason why the members couldn't post a new thread every week though, or oftener.

Maybe you could use this thread to keep track of the reading threads, just a thought. Like, an index.

Thanks,
Alta

I don't mind sharing, as long as KK feels okay about it. Everybody's experience is different, anyway.

hey now! Happy new year!

Ok, I think I can do this... I am in IDS with my Inner Child Cards... But I feel I can do both study and reflections as I HAVE been reading with these cards for a few years... I just felt it was time to REALLY study them inside and out and see how they manifest in my daily life... BUT, because they are a 'themed' deck, I like to keep in touch with what I have learned from the traditional tarot as well...

Also, I am only doing full readings with the Inner Child Cards, but I do like to pull an OsHO Zen every now and then, and so do some of my friends...

I don't have a blog address... I don't even know how to go about it... I'll research unless someone wants to give me a quick run down...

KKat, Let me know if you think doing the IDS and reflections is any sort of conflict... My intention with the IDS is that I would begin doing 1 night a week readings anyways... I was going to begin dedicating that one night by May 1st, but I think, in all honesty, that is just putting off what I should be doing now...

Ok, enough said... Let me know what you think..

Dreamwalker, I don't see how this would interfere with your IDS. The main thing is the weekly reflections with the one deck, hence the "Primary Deck Reflections" part

That's how I feel about the Tarot of Dreams! I'm afraid to touch him. Usually my decks are girls so it's weird having one that feels so male to me.

I was thinking of getting started with an interview spread, so I'm glad to see others are doing that as well. I think it will be fun coming up with a spread of the week for me.

I'm thinking I may also start reading all these tarot related books I've collected over the years. I'm sure I can get through at least one a month.

Dreamwalker, do you have a Hotmail address, or a Windows Live (formerly MSN messenger) account? If so, you already have a blog. It's called "Your space", and you should be able to find it in your profile. That's how I was able to blog for this project.

This may be jus the thing . . .

I have been looking at what I want to do as a commitment to my tarot study this year. I wanted something challenging but attainable. I wanted to undergo a journey of some sort with a deck but while IDS is great it leaves me lacking. I am all fire for two to three months and then I am drained.

My ever growing collection is one thing but a couple of nights ago I came to a startling realization that scared me a bit. I have been studying tarot for a couple of years now and I am doing really well. I have learned many things about the structure and meanings for the cards. and gained an invaluable amount of insight from the cards as well. I am getting to understand Tarot and that is great. But while in bed trying desperate to get to sleep early because of an early morning I decided to work on a bit of a mental exercise which would help me relax and fall asleep. The question was "How many decks can I visualize in order from memory?" Well the Rider-Waite-Smith deck was easy but I don't use it. I then became stumped. I muddled through the Hanson Roberts pretty well but I have not used it in years.

What about my current decks? I could think of my favorite cards, some cards I didn't like much but that was it. It was disturbing. Instead of falling asleep I began to wonder why I couldn't at least picture the cards of the decks I was currently raving about online. A bit two-faced maybe. Sure I was tired but I began to consider if I needed to pick one and use it exclusively. But that is an unrealistic fantasy.

I was left with two decks. I am currently studying the Initiatory Tarot of the Golden Dawn in the IDS thread. Love it because it is new, shiny and has me considering the legacy of the Golden Dawn on modern Tarot. After that trouble night I quickly took up my Liber T which after about six-months of rest after an intense spring IDS I abandoned. This PDR exercise is perfect for me! I will study the one and with the Liber T I will continue to spend time with it in weekly in readings and blog postings.

Also this will give me something to do with my blog that I have struggled to build. Add me to the list! Looking forward to a very interesting year!

Onyx.

I'm thinking about doing this too. I for the last couple of weeks have felt like I'm not into tarot as much as all my oracle... the animal ones, or a couple different divination forms.

I have a bunch of tarot decks and just ordered ToD before it goes OOP. BUT just like Onyx I can't really even go card by card for almost all of them. I haven't sat down and really tried but I think I might be able to with the Gilded, the Fey, and not even on of my definate favs... the MerryDay.

This sounds like a really doable study I think. I hope. I'm not sure...
Now to decide... MerryDay or ToD or do my own thing with a animal oracle deck... would that be ok, even if not tarot ??
And figure out the blog thing too.

Solandia asked us a long time ago that if members wished to post their blogs, it had to be in Advertising. More or less along the lines that it was self-promotion.

Everyone can of course put their blogs into their profile so anyone can click through, so this is not unduly harsh, but please remove your blog links and simply refer others to the Website clickable word under your posts.

Thanks,
Alta

Okay, I have replaced everyone's blog with a Hotlink directly to their Profiles. This will save us from having to go through the Thread post-by-post to read each other's blogs.

Please update your profiles with your blog address by going to:

Optional Information (about half-way down the Page) =>
Home Page URL

Hi Nina* - good to see you.

Got a question for anyone who can answer it -

Do we have to get permission to upload readings/images? I've seen lots of blogs where deck pictures are used so I'm wondering if it's okay just for blogging?

Thanks

Welcome, everybody!

souljourney, an oracle deck would be fine as this is a "Primary Deck Study"

Dreamwalker, souljourney and Nina*, let me know what deck you are going to be using whenever you can.

Off to read some entries!

Re: Copyright and Weblogs

firefrost and all,

Most artists are readily available for comment either here or an E-mail via their Web Sites. I would contact them and make sure you have permission to use their decks' images.

Usually they will allow it if you provide a link back to their Home Pages (sometimes not even that), but at least ask, I would say.

KK, where's this at with using a thread as a journal? I have less than zero interest in setting up a blog, but I'd like to have this kind of constant contact with the Thoth deck.

You would need to open a Thread for each reading in the Your Readings Forum. You could head each entry with something like "thorhammer's PDR Reading Week 1," or something like that.

After you post there, you would post in this Thread a Link to it in order to direct my attention to it (or PM it to me) and I will keep Post #2 updated with a list next to your SN (i.e., Screen Name).

Are you thinking of joining us?

Yeah, I reckon I'll be up for it. So the idea is that I do (at least) one reading a week using this deck, and post it in the YR forum with a link here?

Are there any other requirements, Mr Kat?

Sweet! I have the perfect spread, for a start - it's one that's outlined in Pollack's Forest of Souls. I don't have it on me, but I'll def. post it, hopefully tomorrow. It's designed to be read once a week, at the same time, to explore where one's "Spirit Soul" is and what is its mission.

And it's Ms.
