Tarot Deck Creation Study Group - Getting Started

Just like I've heard said of both the English Premier League Football and American Major League Baseball - creating your own tarot deck is a marathon - not a sprint.

78 individual works of art can be rather daunting! :o

I can only provide assurance from the perspective of one engaged in the process that the effort required is more than adequately repaid. ;D

Things to consider:
1. Theme - can it applied consistantly?
2. Style - ditto.
3. Media
4.

I'm positive others will have more to add but the only way to really get started is to do it. }>

When I get started on a new deck (which I have done many times...) It is always after completing the first card that I know if I can sustain it... (although since I have never completed a deck perhaps you should disregard that...) Let's just say - I have many different versions of the fool that I have done!

there's no fool...

hey kayne--

I haven't crossed paths with you in even god doesn't know days. I'm much in the same situation--I've got 7 fools (the name on the one I really like has been changed to 'Edgedancer')and a few High Priestesses (not to mention the various Queen of Cups)

There's so much that you can't say in just one card. I think that might be the reason we keep doing a particular card over and over... There an awful amount of focus needed to go for a whole deck. I did it once by myself and am now in the middle of an amazing collaboration. At the moment, there's final layouts for the whole 78. I'm running a check on them now. Color is coming soon...

Hey Major Tom--

I've got a fourth for you.

Obsession.

Major Tom, you've got a study group on deck making? *Volunteers to join by raising hand* I'd love some advice on deck creation, the last one I tried was a dismal crash and burn experience Although this time I have a much better Idea I'm still worried I'll be painstakingly illustrating every single card front and back.

im finding the most difficult thing is keeping my style consistent!!! i guess my tarot is going to be for me, so its not a HUGE issue, but....
maybe a way around this is to draft out all the cards first in detail.... i did this, but just made rough sketches, so theres lots of room for "improvements" haha

im also too critical, so im already wanting to redo the first cards!!
this process involves many lessons, thats for sure....(which is the main reason im doing it! })

jujustar, that does sound like a good system to think about trying.

Steve (Ravenswing) did rough sketches of all cards to start with. We looked at those, discussed them in depth before he then created them all as layouts - still no colour at this stage.

We are now going over the layouts and fine tuning before colour is added. By doing this, we have a really good 'feel' for the deck as a whole, have a good idea of the characterisation and story etc.

I think when you see every card in layout form, it gives a buzz to really plough on and finish/colour the deck. It really does become a part of YOU if that makes sense, and as such is harder to put to one side

Good luck with what you do.

Davina

thanks davina,

i get a lot of info from this forum, and its always great.

time management is an issue too... i think for most of us

.... i remember something i read on here months ago that really helped me;

that even if you only have a few minutes to work on a project, then go for it,,, dont keep waiting for that "block" of time to become available, because all those little sessions add up (even though it can be annoying working like that!!!!)

(this is how i need to work at the moment, as i have a 24 hr responsibility..haha)

Smile tarot deck creation

I was at a metaphysical fair mid=April..
A friend of mine uses this set of cards. It's not a tarot deck.
They are a set an artist drew. They are amazingly beautiful. I will find out
the name of them and bring it back here for you in the next few days.
But anyway.. the artist drew these. She has them as art framed, but also
as printed cards. My friend has used them for years.
She's clairvoyant, medium, and a few other things I can't recall the exact titles.
Oh... and the cards are not named.
So with that in mind, that might give you a heads up on creating your own cards to use. I think it sounds pretty neat myself.
Best of luck to those doing it!
