78 DW: Four-Card Layout (0,1,2,21) Chap. 1
Hi, all! Glad to have you all here! [The following thread refers to a chapter from the book, 78 Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack. Please refer to the thread "78 DW: F.A.Q.'s" for Frequently Asked Questions.] The first chapter of Rachel Pollack's 78 Degrees of Wisdom introduces the reader to the idea that the Major Arcana are representative of a psychological/spiritual journey that a person can take. Ms. Pollack further condenses the process down to just four cards, which she lays out in the following pattern: ---00--- -1----2- ---21--- 00 = The Fool 1 = The Magician 2 = The High Priestess 21 = The World The Fool and The World make a vertical line which represent unity, or wholeness, both in a state of innocence and as the culmination of the journey. The Magician and The High Priestess make a horizontal line which represent duality in many forms: male/female, active/passive, and so on. Lay out these same cards from the deck you have chosen to use in this study group. What dualities or similarities can you see in the Fool/World pairing and the Magician/High Priestess pairing? How is it similar/different from what Ms. Pollack discusses? Any other comments or ideas about this chapter are also welcome, of course! Peace, Melvis |

Hi Melvis, I just saw your post and since I am absolutely fascinated by the book (I started studying it over Christmas and am overwhelmed by all the deeper meanings of the cards explained in it) I thought that I would just jump in now. To me the diamond is almost like a shrine, a temple and I imagine us humans INSIDE it, i.e. in the middle between the four cards. We stand somewhere between innocence and wisdom, black and white, active and passive etc. Does that make sense? Does anyone else agree? It's just an idea, an image I have in my head when I look at the four cards. (I am using the RW deck, by the way.) Soraya |

I got the book yesterday and have finished only 3 chapters. I use the Robin Wood deck. One of the first things I notice is that the wreath the dancer in The World appears to be leaping through is a "zero". So, the Fool's quest has come to completion, perhaps to begin the journey again. The differences in The Magician and The High Priestess are very evident in the Robin Wood Deck. The Magician is working inside in a bright light, the High Priestess outside at night with only the full moon for illumination. His right hand (active) is in the superior position, her left (intuitive) is superior. He has tools (wand, sword, pentacle, cup) to work with, she has only knowledge (a book - what is known, and a crystal ball - what can be known). Yet in their differences, there are similarities: both figures are flanked by dark and light 'pillars'. His are in the form of black and white candles. Hers are in the form of black and white trees. The masculine and feminine, the light and the dark are balanced in both The Magician and The High Priestess.

Yes, thank you for the offer, Kaz! I was on the chat w/Solandia last night, and she enabled the attachment thing ~ so I hope to attach the scan ASAP (I have to rescan it as a GIF or JPEG, the original was a BMP). Anyway, it's so true about the nicest people being right here ![]()
