8 of Disks--Prudence

8 = Thoughts, mind
Disks = physical

Putting ones mind to money or gain

The disks are enormous purple flowers with yellow and orange pinwheel centers that grow in an orderly way, 4 on each side, from a large gray twisted stem or tree that grows up the middle. Each flower is shaded by a large serrated leaf. The sky is yellow and the ground is green with brown lines (irrigation ditches?).

Here is the elusive “Prudence,” the cardinal virtue that got away. I prefer to think of the Priestess as Prudence (as Wisdom), and would like to give Mark McElroy a peck on the cheek for showing his Lo Scarabeo Priestess with a mirror (an attribute of Renaissance Prudence emblems, which also refers to the reflected light of the moon). (Uh oh, back to Thoth!)

Crowley associates this card with money—money or other gain that is gotten by waiting. The accumulation of interest or the growth of a crop. And for artisans. Making something for sale or use also takes patience and prudence. He also hints at investment in stocks (similar to interest) and gambling. He says you will make money gambling if you cheat! AND have patience. He says the disks/flowers are in the geomantic form of Populus, and fortunate figure for the common person. If a common person gains from financial prudence, that is definitely fortunate. He says this is the best of the 8s because it in financial matters, there is strength in doing nothing at all. Just wait for the interest to come in or the stocks to increase in value. (The idea behind the 401k. But nowadays that’s all up in the air. I wonder if someone gets this card it means to keep their money in their retirement account!)

Sun in Virgo: Crowley: “suggests birth.” Is that because the masculine sun enters a virgin to impregnate her? The Sun in Virgo is late summer, not spring . . .
Banzhaf: “Thoroughness, harvest when chaff is separated from wheat, economist, scientist, cautious person.”

I Ching hexagram 33, Heaven over Mountain, Big Air, Retreat. Crowley associates it with the retiring yin energy of Virgo retreating into the soil. The energy of fertility is hidden. The text is about the best way to retreat and that sometimes retreating is the best option. Another iteration of waiting until the time is right to profit from the situation.

In a reading: This is the time for patience, and yes, prudence. Waiting, or even retreating, is sometimes a better strategy than forging ahead. “Good things come to those who wait.” Keep your money in your 401k!
