Greetings, Here are scans of an early 'Tarot Classic' deck. I doubted it ever really was a true old deck, but here is the proof. It even has that Ace of Cups..A big clam lol..... at least it looks like one to me. there is more to this deck I think than first meets the eye. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=..._1870%2F00.jpg enjoy, Freddie |

There are editions of the "Tarot Classic" deck which have different colouring. It is the US Games colouring which renders it a bit of a hotch-potch. It didn't have a pink tower in the original version. AG Muller currently do a version of what we know as the "Tarot Classic" and it is the same images, but just with better colouring. The one you link is another one of those editions (not AG Muller though, I don't think) |

Hi, Thank you both. I find the colouring on many Marseille decks to be quite reckless at the best of times as The Hanged Man in most packs often has blue hair. I like that kind of psychedelic feel in some of the older Marseille decks, it reminds me of a carnival, circus, or fun fair. I like to feel that I can connect to the human images in any deck, but still have them slightly surreal and prompting my subconscious. The recent resorations and revisions of the Marseille deck are good, but I like these a bit more organic. I'll say this about Tarot Classic..in no way is it the best Marseille type tarot..BUT...I think (in my humble opinion) it has some of the best court cards of any Marseille deck. Le Fanu, how would you date this one? I haven't a clue, but I know you are very knowledeable about historical decks. I'll guess it to be around 1886-1900, some time right after the Effiel Tower was built or was being built. freddie |

Links not working! When they come back I shall have another look! I didn't think it was that recent..... The Tarot Classic is Schaffhaus isn't it? I could be wildly wrong on this one as it isn't a deck I know much about, but I thought it was late 18th Century... The pinkness always distracted me

Indeed it is very pink. The Two of Cups always looks to me like it has the Effiel Tower on it, must be my over zealous imagination. Thanks for the info!! Freddie |
