Arcus Arcanum--The High Priest

Morwenna

This is the mirror-counterpart to the High Priestess. He is sitting on a stone throne near an archway that resembles a trilithon, with a blue curtain covered with images of birds. The curtain is partly drawn back to reveal a vista with mountain peaks and several birds in flight.

He is wearing a gray robe trimmed in gold, with a purple cloak. His cloak clasp, pendant, headband, belt, and the scabbard at his feet all bear sunbursts, as do the arms of his throne. His staff is surmounted by wings. His hands are apart, and his right hand is in a gesture of blessing. His face looks serene, almost smiling (if we were seeing him from an angle slightly above rather than slightly below, I believe it would look like a smile). His eyes are open and he's looking straight ahead (not at the viewer, but from his own perspective).

This is Air, with hints of Fire in the sun imagery and in the reddish sky (it could be either sunrise or sunset). This is also the conscious, the open, the welcoming one, the exoteric.

Contrasting this card with the High Priestess, whose archway is the same kind, we have:
gold vs. silver
sun vs. moon
air vs. water
open vs. closed eyes
wide gesture vs. closed/holding gesture
sunshine vs. clouds
exoteric vs. esoteric

Putting these two cards together with the Empress and Emperor, we have all four elements represented. And all of them are sitting on stone thrones or benches with obvious cracks in them. Is it because there's something faulty in each of the figures, or is it because the thrones are so old they're venerable and thus fit for such archetypal figures?
