Kalendrier et compost des bergers
I am reading the very interesting book of Jacques Halbronn "Etteilla, l'astrologie du livre de Thot, suivie de Recherches sur l'histoire de l'astrologie et du tarot" Among other things (in particular the book contains a full facsimilé reprint of the quatrième cahier + supplément of Etteillas book: Manière de se récréer ..." ) he mentions some pictural analogy between Tarot cards and pictures founded in the Kalendrier et Kompost des Bergers. There are also some photos to illustrate this similtude in the book. Curious, I made some search and could download from the BNF two different editions of the Kalendrier as well as Illustrations from a third edition. For the sake of simplicity I name them 1, 2 and 3. I was really very astonished and impressed about the similitude one can find in the pictures! First of all the style of the edition 1 is very very similar to the style of a TDM (Conver style) Second there are indeed pictural themes and symbolic that you can easily recognise in the major arcane. On AT I could only find this post from JMD who mentions the Kalendrier He also posted a picture which has a lot of similarity with Le Pendu. http://www.tarotforum.net/showpost.p...8&postcount=27 Edit: Oh, and this one too: http://www.tarotforum.net/showpost.p...51&postcount=8 I post some scans on two threads (with fantasy titles only to point to some analogy) The edition 1 seems to be from 1497, I am not sure about the other. You can find them if you go to the BNF http://gallica.bnf.fr/?lang=en and type "calendrier des bergers" in the search field. The three first results are the documents I am talking about. What a find coredil. I can see similarities to the Marseilles decks in the images, composition and timing. I wonder what this tells us about the images that were commonplace at the time and therefore used in various works. Thanks for sharing your find with us. __________________ Insh'Allah Bukra Mumkin |
