Arcus Arcanum--Justice (#8)

Morwenna

A woman stands in the courtyard of a castle holding aloft a pair of scales in her left hand, and a lowered sword in her right. She looks toward the viewer with a solemn, perhaps a sad, expression. She is dressed completely in white, cloak and all, except for her golden belt, cloak clasp, and headband, and it appears her shoes are also golden. Both portcullises leading into the castle are open, and there is light within.

With the scales raised, she seems to be emphasizing justice over might, but the sword is there if and when she needs it. The sword can be a literal sword, of course, but also the means of distinguishing (think sword suit = intellect). But her expression seems to indicate that justice doesn't always make people happy! She does what she must but she doesn't have to like it.

The castle seems to be a place of authority, but the light within indicates that the authority may be enlightened (yes, I know, wordplay is fair game in Tarot!). Her white clothing shows her purity of motive, her gold accessories indicate her own authority. And she is not sequestered or seated, but stands in the open air, as if to show she is an active principle in the world.

And despite all the stonework, there is a sizeable shrub in the corner of the courtyard. This is not a sterile place, there's growth here.
