In the previous verse I mentioned gold from Tiphareth being poured into the subconscious/West (Yesod). Between these two is the path of Samekh. This path, and the path of Peh that runs across it, really is the fiery furnace where the initiate is forged and strengthened. Just like tempered steel.
The old name name of the Tarot card for this path was Temperance. To temper something is to modify it. The golden influence from the angel when it reaches subconsciousness is often experienced as the sexual Mars force (Mars = Iron), Kundalini. From this raw material steel can be forged.

I hadn't noticed that the path of Peh and Geburah were both attributed to Mars. Hmmm.
