The very first spread I ever did years ago (before I allowed my skills to get rusty, which I deeply apologise for and am now trying to put right) was the pyramid spread. It applies to any question (relationships, jobs, family). I used to ask a question of the deck but I suppose you could do a general reading from it as well.

(Whoops, looks messy but I did try!) I used to deal all the cards face down then turn over 1, 4, 8, 12 and 16 to get a general overview, then read all of the other cards in order one by one.
I feel like such an amateur in comparison with everyone else on this site but I hope that all made sense.
Still, practice makes perfect...well, it hones your reading skills anyway (I hope)!

There is also a book by Sylvia Abraham called How To: Use Tarots Spreads. The spreads are many and varied,from short ones to longer ones and cover a wide variety of issues. I have this book and have used it with success on reading spreads with wildly different subject matters.

Wavebreaker gave you a good suggestion here. I have 6 books on tarot spreads but this is the one I found most valuable. The spreads are easy, understandable, and go from one card up to a 24 card spread. The subjects of the spreads are inventive and interesting. The only spread book I'd buy over again if I had too. I started out immediately with the Celtic Cross. Although a lot of people claim to be aversed to it, I found it simple yet informative. I still use it, but if you'd rather have more to-the-point readings, I'd also suggest the past-present-future spread. Or you could do a search on the web, there are a lot of options out there.

I use the Celtic Cross, for general readings. I have used other spreads but I find Celtic works best. I also use for yes and no questions the 3 cards spread of past, present and future.

I actually kept a journal on the cards and the spreads and felt these spreads worked the best. But you know how it is, someone is always tring to reinvent the wheel. Do what feels the best for you!

Beginner's spread


As someone who's too impatient to plow through the Celtic Cross very often, I find the 3-card spread, Issue, Advice, Outcome extremely useful.

I've found that frequently the second card sometimes has its own ideas and doesn't actually "advise", but gives additional information on the "issue."
