Herbal Tarot - Three of Swords - Pleurisy Root


You can see the minor arcane cards in Constellation 3.

Description: A large heart is floating in a stormy sky with three swords piecing it. There is a large pleurisy plant floating behind the heart. The sun can be seen behind the heart and plant. Two seeds are floating close to the heart and plant.

Significant Details: The swords represent strength. The pierced heart and pleurisy plant represent problems of the heart.

Medicinal Uses: Pleurisy root has expectorant properties, and was used by native Americans for chest complaints. American Nature Guides Herbs by Anna Kruger. “Pleurisy Root is said to be an effective treatment for a many respiratory disorders due to its ability to decrease inflammation, relieve spasms in the airways, promote perspiration, and help clear the air passages of secretions. It is very good for the treatment of uterine disorders.” It is diaphoretic, anti-spasmodic, carminative, anti-inflammatory, relaxing expectorant, and diuretic. “Pleurisy root can be used in the problems of bronchitis and other chest condition. It is also used in the treatment of pleurisy , pneumonia & influenza. The root contain antispasmodic, carminative, mildly cathartic, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, tonic and vasodilator properties & very popular as a medicinal herb for the treatment of a various kind of lung diseases. It give great advantage to treat lung infections, cough, fever, and the flu. It give great benefit in the treatment of diarrhoea, dysentery & rheumatism if taken internally. It is also used to remove warts on skins when applied externally. It can also be used to treat menstrual cycle (monthly period) problems when taken by mouth.” Side effects: Excess doses (1 tablespoon or more of the root at one time) of Pleurisy Root can be highly toxic & show adverse effects. Symptoms of excess intake are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, intestinal cramping, and irregular heartbeat. Death can possible from respiratory paralysis or heart failure. Pleurisy root may show the symptoms of toxicity from digoxin, a medication often used to cure heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). Its side effects are changes in vision, heart rhythm changes, nausea, drowsiness and vomiting.
