I like the "mostly" heh!

I am done with conformists. In a big way - rebellion is overflowing in me and I am DONE WITH THEM, I say.

I can't even begin to imagine what being a nun would be like. To the extent that I could probably better imagine what life on Alpha Centauri would be like...

What did you wear? Not a habit? You'd look like Whoopi Goldberg!

Contemplative order - behind the grille. It's hard to know what you look like; there are no mirrors. At all.

It was good. Very good. I learned a lot. But it wasn't my calling and I knew I had to leave, so I did. Hadn't taken final vows so it's easy - you just discuss with the novice mistress, and after enough discussion, if you still feel that way - you walk out the door. Changed, but the same.

They're much more open now - this was thirty years ago .....

I'm not even a Christian any more - so much has changed in me!

Well mostly when he is talking about being a pork-loving Jew. And occasionally when he is trying out his pick up lines.

You're better gone if it's not right for you.

It was fun - we had enormous fun. There is a LOT of laughter and joy. Truly. People don't see that but there is a well-spring of pure joy that runs through a contemplative convent.

I don't know how it is in active orders - ones that do schools or hospitals and things. We prayed. A lot. I liked that. We all did or we wouldn't have been there. A contemplative convent or monastery is an absolute powerhouse of prayer, and a place of great joy.

But it wasn't for me. In many ways I have always regretted that it wasn't my calling - but you can't stay if it's not your vocation.

It's not quite to that extent, because I'm only half a Jew, really. My father is Roman Catholic, and growing up we didn't really do any of any of it. We had a Christmas tree, and we'd have a small passover seder with my grandparents, but that about covers it. No one ever explained to me what any of it meant religiously. I think I have a childhood memory of my father telling me that Jesus was a man with a mental disorder who convinced lots of other people to have mental disorders, too...

In some ways your father was hilarious, Zan!

Just a tad intolerant in others

Haha to say the least. But you're right. He did occasionally have his moments. And I am very glad looking back that I was raised to be such a free-thinker. Just a tad TOO free for his tastes
