Rosetta Tarot-The Empress III
The Empress wears a crown with 12 stars-a refrence to the twelve signs of the zodiac. There is a crescent moon behind her head and under her feet. All of the majors seem have important symbols at or near the head and the feet, both places where we can pull in solar/celestial energy from above or lunar/earth energy from below. Also the moon under the feet is shown in many depictions of the Madonna. A sheaf of wheat is her left hand (Demeter to the Priestess's Persephone?) and a lotus wand I think in her right. There is a red rose for desire near the moon at her feet. I'm not sure what the white flower on the ground is and might symbolize. Sje has a Venus symbol at her throat. There are bees around the neckline of her gowns. The symbols of the zodiac are on her belt. Her gown is a pinkish red which makes me thinks of the Venus aspect of this card agin. I'm not sure what the design at the hem is. The shield near her feet has the alchemical symbol of the white eagle (a complement to the Emperor's red lion and part of the Great Work). There's a body of water behind her throne so the land is fertile like the Empress herself. Her throne looks like a set of wings behind her. It looks as if there may be a bird, maybe a swan, behind her head. She looks pregnant and the foot sticking out from her hem has no shoe on (barefoot and pregnant I guess). This card is very lush, full of beauty and fertility symbols. Finally, there is a green doorway around the Empress which fits in with the Hebrew letter attributed to this card, Daleth (door). Here she is, Miss Demeter ;-) holding her bundle of wheat in the gesture of Mater Triumphans (Isis suckling the royal infant Horus). Her body loosely suggests the glyph of Salt, the salt of the sea of life, the amniotic fluid. She sits between the waxing and waning moons, one of which is also a sickle or scythe, symbolizing both harvest and death that is part of life. |
