How right you are. That is why adreneline was so effective as was the old cure of Stramononium.(Datura)Hmmm, personally I could never see how heroin would help asthma. Doesnt asthma require one to try to breath more and Heroin slow down the respiration? I had asthma when young ... the immediate need is to get more air and breaths in and out (lack of oxygen ... not hyperventilation) not to slow the breathing.
Crowley was not alone, in heroin use. He was one of thousands at the time.In my opinion there is an obvious dynamic and lesson here ... I think it is foolish to totally exuse or totally blame ... a bit of both ... but from all this we can totally learn.
The law 1926 made the requirement for a medicinal reason, important for both the doctor and the patient. If you were to read the poetry of two of my great uncles, who were registered users- it is spiritual and wonderful, but their lives became messy. Was it the 1st world war or addictive personalities that started them on an opium track- who knows??It does not detract from their poetry. They also had "asthma" to get their supply legally.
There was a sort of shame associated with opiate use, whereas smoking reefers was seen as Bohemian and somewhat cool, and that 'helped asthma' too!
Good advice, and for me done and dusted. If you think that passage in in the Book of the Law means you will be able to take addictive drugs and they will not harm you then you have Crowley's expereinces to read about and balance your opinion.
