SweetIsTheTruth
This card is a perfect example of the timeless appeal of the Morgan-Greer deck, for several reasons.
The moon appears larger than life, between two towers, in an atmosphere inundated with darker shades of turquoise blues and greens, emphasizing the watery nature of this trump. The tower on the right appears remarkably similar to the tower depicted on the 16th trump.
The up-close and personal nature of the imagery of the Morgan-Greer, is exploited particularly well in this trump. The stripped down, simplified renderings on the card, leave no question as to the two canines which appear in the foreground, with one in front of each tower. One of the earlier explanations for the canines, found in the historical forums, suggests mistaking a dog for a wolf. This implies mistaking a friend (loyalty) for a foe (predator), pointing to illusions often associated with this trump. In more traditional renderings, the canines are so small that such details could be easily missed. In the Morgan-Greer, the implication is explicitly in your face, in a way that can't be denied. In the very center of the card, at the bottom, a crayfish comes crawling out of the deep in the middle of the night. Given the fossil record of the crayfish is 150 million years old, it points to the most ancient of contents found in our subconscious and the issues that have been with us for the longest time.
The entire picture is one of illusion. The moon appears too large in this trump to be an accurate depiction of reality. The moon looks like a light, but has no light of its own. You do not see what you think you see. Appearances are deceiving. This suggests it might be best to not trust what one sees given the illusive nature of appearances, leaving us in self-doubt. How can we trust ourselves, if we can't even trust what we see with our own eyes?
In the series of the trumps, we had the stripping away of lies and all that is false in the Tower, followed by the nakedness and calm in the aftershock of the Star. This is followed by the Moon, wherein our oldest doubts and fears surface yet again and could easily mislead us. It's impossible to see clearly in the darkness which is why this trump can leave us so spooked and confused.
