In English, there are not many books on the TdM specifically. Gareth Knight's The Magical World of the Tarot and The Treasure House of Images are two I would strongly recommend, although they also represent the English line of interpretations rather than the French ones where they diverge. Treasure House is specifically about the TdM, and Magical World a beginner's book made for use with pip card decks generally. Paul Huson's Mystical Origins of the Tarot also discusses the TdM generally. Joseph Maxwell's The Tarot is also available in English; this is an older book, as are the books by Papus and Wirth. There was an older coffee table book available, but it is OOP and hard to find, that is specifically about the TdM. __________________ Le beau valet de coeur et la dame de pique Causent sinistrement de leurs amours défunts. __________________ Baudelaire |

Michael, There is also a beautiful book called Meditations on the Tarot, by Unknown Author, which is based on the Tarot de Marseille (though it is not about the meanings in the reading sense). If you've not already read it or heard of it, it's a deep spiritual exploration of the Tarot - and far beyond - from a Christian point of view. It's been translated from the French by Robert Powell and is available on Amazon. __________________ All generalizations are false, including this one. Mark Twain |

getting one
ordered Jodo's book from amazon.fr. eager to read something a bit different than Carole Sédillot's excellent encyclopedia (Ombres et Lumières du Tarot). so Jodo's thick book might be just what the doctor ordered... i warmly recommend everybody to read the interview rusty neon mentioned earlier in this thread. kissa __________________ "Give up defining yourself - to yourself or to others. Raw material for the right side and the left side too...
I am reading Jodorowsky's book "La Voie du Tarot" and for fun also one of his aphorisms/philosophical books "L'Echelle des Anges" (The Angels' ladder). I am happy. Truly happy. Jodo's book on Tarot is full of insights. It also compares religions and offers a much larger view of the place of Tarot in the world than I had the chance to read about so far. It is a pity the book is only available in spanish or french, I bet this would be a fantastic and efficient way to bring the Marseilles tradition to native english-speaking students. But haven't any of you seen Jodorowsky's films??? I love Santa Sangre and El Topo lurches along like nobody's business. In all honesty, that's why I got the Jodo-Camoin deck when I realised I needed a Marseilles. (Sorry if I'm going off subject ...) |

Well, allow me to go off-subject too… I read Jodorowsky’s amazing « Comic » books when I was in high school. First of all, a very creepy “Les yeux du chat” (The cat’s eyes), and then the Incal series, full of “esoteric” meanings… I strongly recommend the reading of Incal (six books), but have no idea if there is an English translation. __________________ There is a crack in everything That's how the light gets in. / Leonard Cohen, "Anthem" |

The Holy Mountain
I am a bit late to arrive to this thread, never mind! I recently got the Camoin-Jodorowsky Marseilles. Damn I wish I could read French Jodorowsky's book sounds interesting! Whitley Strieber's book 'The Path' relates to this deck. Unfortunatley it seems to be out of print. ..and has Jodorowsky's film 'The Holy Mountain' been mentioned yet? It's a visual feast. Art as the inner quest, a journey of initiation. Jodorowsky plays the Alchemist... |
