Question Profile Picture - Uploading & Image Size

I'm trying to upload a profile picture but it's not working properly (at least I don't think it is). It says on the upload:

The maximum size of your custom image is 120 by 120 pixels or 97.7 KB (whichever is smaller).

Well, my computer tells me my image size is only 49.3 KB--and it's a JPG, so it can't get much smaller without losing its integrity. But the site still says it's too big when I try to upload it, and that it must be 120x120 pixels. I don't understand this. When I try reducing the size to make it fit the 120x120 pixels and still keep its proportions (it's a tarot card) it is so small that the image is illegible. Is there something wrong with the upload for not accepting my 49.3 KB or am I doing something wrong?

I've noticed that, too. I think it's supposed to mean it can be up to 120 x 120 as long as it's not greater than 97.7 K. In other words, I think the dimensions are most important. As long as it's not greater than 120 pixels on a side, it will probably be under 97.7 K.

Just a suggestion...

First I scan in the card.

Second, I open it with Image Expert (for example)

Then I crop out all the white part so just the card is left.

Do same with a picture....

Click ok and Save it.

Then Open Image...resize and in the box where it says pixels...make one 120 and the other should be less.

With cards I think one has to be less than 300 and the other should be less...so start with the largest number and make it 120.

Then save again. Now you are ready to upload it by Browsing...find it, double-click on it and it is ready to go.

Hope this works.

It took me awhile to figure out fast way to do cards once I got the scanner. I wasn't cropping out the white first.

Thanks for your replies. That's pretty much what I did tmgrl, except I got the image online and I used Photoshop, but I left the white in. I'll try cropping it and see if it helps; if not, oh well...I guess I'll have to stick with a better-proportioned picture.

Can you shrink it in "Paint" using stretch & skew? I'm gonna have to look it up and see who it was who told me about this, it's the greatest, most freeing thing ever

It was lunalafey whol enlightened me...

I have no trouble shrinking it. Photoshop is great for doing just about anything (though I also have Paint). The problem is that by the time I get the image small enough at its proportions it's incomprehensible. Stretching it would distort the image and I don't want to do that...oh well...

How large and how detailed is the original image?

Do you have somewhere online that you can put it to show us, so we might be able to offer more suggestions?

Sure...it's the Star card (second one) on this page (all the cards side by side is one image so I can't get a singled out image, but I just did a screen shot and cut that card out). So it's the same size as it or any one of the cards is on that page, approximately. Basically the size of an actual tarot card. If I shrink it to fit, WAY too small. Tis not fun.

I agree Dead Star! This is very frustrating! I have been trying to upload pictures as well and no matter how much I have reduced them to just a tiny dot on the screen it still gives me the same message that the picture is too large! How can that be?!?! I wonder if there is any way to work around this problem!!

There was no link there.. which page is it at?
Or, if it's the Star card, which deck is it from? And do you want the whole card in the image, or a square cropped out of it as large as can be?
