Franklinite

VisionQuest

I am going to a local mineral dump where they seem to have, in abundance, the mineral Franklinite.

I had never heard of it before, but I am strangely drawn to it. It grows in octahedral form, with I think is just too cool, lol.

I was just wondering if anyone here was familiar with/or has some.
I plan on bringing back other stuff, but hopefully I won't be so drawn to the Franklinite it's all I'll end up with. :)

VisionQuest,

Franklinite is of the Magnetite series, Spinel group.
It is iron black, opaque except in thin fragments. Metallic to dull. Streaks reddish brown to black.
It has Zinc, Manganese, and Iron in it and is weakly magnetic.
It occurs associated with calcite, willemite, zincite, tephroite, rhodonite, and other minerals and is found in the zinc deposits in New Jersey.

Hope this helps some,
