Recommend deck for a teenager

Kaylee Marie

My thirteen-year-old cousin has shown an interest in my tarot cards, so I thought I'd get her a deck of her own for her next birthday. Any suggestions? She's boy-crazy and very fashion- and trend-conscious. So I'm afraid she won't respond to the "old-fashioned" artwork in any of the standard decks. I asked her what kind of artwork she does like and she just said "girly." Like that narrows it down.

Can anyone recommend a deck that uses Rider-Waite symbolism but would appeal to a younger person?

Thanks,
Kaylee Marie

Not sure that this would be right or not, but I just received the Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot. I would suggest it to a younger person since it does not have any imagery in it that is disturbing - the Tower and Death cards are quite light, even though they are rich in symbolism and colour, as are all the cards.

The cards have beautiful costumes and as I am finding, are fun to use, but not cutsie. I think a young person may like them, but for a thirteen year old who may want something a little more 'adult' in 'their eyes', maybe another choice would be more appropriate. I remember that the Londa was designed by someone who previously worked in either fashion or costume, and the drawings look very much like the kind of illustrations associated with that.

Other ideas - Druidcraft, maybe. Not girly, but an all round good deck with substance.

Will think some more about this.

The 'Witchy Tarot', I would consider, is quite girly. But as a tarot deck, I do not like it. There have been other discussions about it here, if you do a search.

Titania's Star Tarot is quite nice and colourful; and the Art Nouveau is a very 'pretty' deck (not the Matt Myers deck).

The Hanson-Roberts is what I would call 'girly' (even though I like it a lot too :D )
And it is completely like RWS.

I'd suggest the Enchanted Tarot; its artwork is very soft and feminine.

The Gilded Tarot would also be a nice option.

She wants a "girly" deck, huh? Perhaps the Zerner/Farber or Enchanted tarot would be a good choice; both follow Rider-Waite-Smith symbolism for the most part, but are definitely on the frilly/girly side.

Another nice choice might be Jane Lyle's Secret tarot (aka Renaissance tarot . . but look for the one by Lyle, as there are other Renaissance decks out there). It is a good beginner's deck with no nudity or occult symbolism or anything that might scare the parents, yet it is (in my experience) lovely, rather feminine, and easy to read with. For the most part, it also follows Rider-Waite-Smith meanings.

Edited to add - Ah, and the Hudes tarot!! Definitely have a look at the Hudes tarot. Beautiful deck, user-friendly, and the people in the deck tend to have a very youthful look about them.

If she doesn't like the old-fashioned look, and wants something modern but "girly" (I supose that means soft?) - why not the Ananda Tarot (don't be put off by the German titles on the AT scans - it exists in English); or the Fey. Both of which have a dreamy-but-modern feel about them, rather than the anachronistic period look - modern people dressed up in old clothes - which most decks seem to have.

I hadn't thought of The Fey ...

... but I think that would be an excellent choise.

What the heck does "girly" mean, really?

I will second the recommendation for the Fey Tarot, especially as it is good tarot, not just stylish. RWS compatible in meanings, with new imagery.
A few cards here:

If she's wanting "girly" as in ballerinas and unicorns, she might check out the Moon Garden. Some of the cards of that deck are pictured here:

Gendron, in a pink box no less, is a photo and painting collage deck that has a feminine energy. It's closer to BOTA than RWS, but does have scenic pips. Some cards shown at:

Another deck that is RWS compatible on meanings though quite different in imagery, and is very "chick-lit" in style, is the Oracle Tarot Deck by Lucy Cavendish. Be warned that it does not have any court cards. My review of that deck is here:

A close RWS variation that is astoundingly cute and cuddly is the Ator Tarot.

You could go the other way on cute and get the extremely sweet Hanson Roberts which is also an extremely close RWS variation.
