Morgan Greer Study: King of Cups
The court cards in this deck are very beautiful. The colours are very deep and even though they do not seem like a very happy bunch, you can get an idea of their personality, due to the fact that they are so close up, rather than seated somewhere in the distance. They are like little portraits or photo-booth pictures. I drew the King of Cups from my deck this evening. I must say that on first glance there does not seem to be much to draw on from this card, which is why I have posted this thread. Any details that others can add would be of great interest and help. I noted the following - From the LWB - A man of great compassion and understanding. He has succeeded in his endeavours and has found peace and contentment. He is helpful and kind to others. My first notes - This king is a handsome man. When I look at him, I see someone that is gentle, romantic and caring. He is understanding and in control of his emotions. He is the sensitive older man that takes you under his wing and listens to your problems. He is there for you when you need him. The card is very still. The water behind the king is moving, but it is not rocky. The colours are light and relaxing, but also deep and sensual. In one hand he holds some kind of metal staff. In the other is a large golden cup. I also find that sometimes it helps for me to relate the card to a personal experience, so I am going to share one here. Not very long ago, I had a problem on a night out, where I (lets say) over-indulged somewhat, leaving me in a very confused state of dispair. Leaving the place I was, I made my way to a river as I thought it would be the best place to try and get through what was happening to me. As I walked along the river, all I could focus on was the silhouette of a young man infront of me - there was nobody else about. He was walking a little way ahead and I walked slowly behind. After a couple of minutes, he moved off to the bank and disappeared into a small tent. I passed the tent and a little further up, since I was feeling quite unwell, found a tree and slumped underneath it. For about five minutes, I watched the silhouette of the man leave the tent and return again. Then, eventually, I could see he was walking towards me. He asked if I was okay and offered me some water from the bottle he had just been to fill up and took me over to a quiet bench. Even though he looked a little older, he was a 21 year old man from Poland. I explained what had happened and he listened, not judging me and for the next two or three hours, sat with me and helped me get through it all before I went home. I think of this man as I look at this card because he was so self-less. He was happy to share his time, water and cigarettes with me - making sure that I was okay. He was very interesting and intelligent when he spoke, but was also very keen to listen and share my stories and experiences. He made me take his number so that I could send him an SMS message when I got in. He said he wanted to know that I got home safely. I see someone in this card that is very nurturing and that you can trust, especially when you are in a vulnerable position like I was that night. What else do you see in this card? LB |

King of cups
When I first saw this card, my thought was he looked awfully young to be King. His brow is smooth, he has no facial hair, and his hands look like they're retaining water. He's dressed in marine colors and holds a scepter for authority. It says the sea represents the source of life. The book says he's a strong, powerful, and secretive man who gives excellent advice. one who demands respect but with a tendency to be manipulative. I would change secretive to 'private' man. I think he's learned to handle his emotions and has found a balance. He looks calm, his energy controlled. But I can understand how he could manipulate others through Their feelings. Like all the Kings, everything is in his 'crown'. His thoughts are tightly bound in by his crown. His gaze is pretty direct, like he's really listening, with understanding and compassion. But sometimes I think he's just wishy-washy.

Hi Cascade I like what you have said - especially replacing 'secretive' with 'private'. When I looked at this king, I wanted to like him. I always feel I that I should like the members of the Cups suit - that they are the ones that are genuinely caring and would help me if I need them, which is why I probably related this king to the young Polish man I mentioned (by the river) in my last post. However, there is a barrier with this king and it is in the way that he is dressed. Like you said, it is all in his crown. It is like he is protecting himself or holding things back since he is so wrapped up and doesn't appear as open as I would imagine him to be. Looking at the clothing, I see the outer garments as intellect and reason (yellow). The ones beneath are blue, maybe showing that inside, he does have a great depth of emotion that he only shares when he feels comfortable to do so. Maybe he has been burnt in the past and has learnt to not be as free with his emotions as the young knight or page may be. His giving and taking may be more levelled and controlled. The metal staff could warn someone that he means business; that even though he is willing to help, he is not willing to be taken advantage of. LB |

King of cups
I wonder if it's significant that this 'regally aloof' couple are the only pair with their backs to each other? __________________ The Fates lead he who will. he who won't, they'll drag. |

To me, this king seems the perfect picture of calm control ... he has a steady gaze and is not concerned about the rocky water behind him. To me he is very regal, due to the gold colouring of the card ... and his staff ... he is kind of like a king that you would read about in a fairy tale - young and handsome, but kind at the same time. The water in the background looks quite rough to me ... but he seems unaffected by it ... kind of like he is above petty concerns. He is softer than the other kings, but is still masculine. He is a contrast to the Queen of Cups ... she really seems to blend into the background ... and is emersed in the pale colours of the card - whereas the colours on the this card are bolder ... I see this King ... as being in control but not forceful ... he has a gentleness ... and looks as though he would trust his own intuition and gut instinct about things ... I love the colours of this card ... the gold and blues really seem to emphasize his royalty. I had never noticed that they had their backs to each other ... thanks for pointing that out
