I'm thinking of getting an astrological calendar + a book (like Sydney Omar) denoting what each of the differing transits/aspects mean relative to my sun sign. What I'm wondering about is two-fold: Can a book that covers all people born under one sign give a fairly accurate perspective on how transits/aspects will affect a person (or would it be more like an expanded sun sign colum in the daily paper?) and Once you have a basic understanding of your natal chart and major planet/luminary rulerships, how do you go about (and how long does it take to learn) how daily planetary trends affect you specifically? Sorry to ask so many questions, but I'm really trying to figure this all out. Thanks for your kindness and patience

A cook book of sun-sign astrology is only one part of a bunch of stuff that beginners need to look at -- BUT, buy a paperback that doesn't cost much because once you've scanned it through you can throw it away and go on from there. Its a necessary step, but a short step. Go for solid textbooks and plan on buying perhaps 10 or so over the next year plus doing a lot of studying and charts. Astrology requires a commitment and if you really want to pursue it, then do it right. There are lists of resources at the top of this forum for you to choose from.
