??? Maxwell <-> Grimaud <-> Arnoult <-> Marteau ???

Oops...

I have edited my previous post for my misquoting.
The company name "CHARTIER, MARTEAU ET BOUDIN" was used from 1909, when Georges Marteau (Paul's uncle) retired, not from "1916".

1. Not sure what he means with "the last Grimaud TdM edition"
Was he not aware of a Marteau edition, or was Marteaus deck not known at this time?

Hi coredil:)
Marteau's deck must have been published by 1931, at least.
According to an exhibition catalogue of a French playing-card museum, in 1931 the French occultist Georges Muchery announced the release of "Ancien Tarot de Marseille" in his magazine "LE CHARIOT".

I checked 1933 original of Maxwell's book, too.
It does seem that the deck he mentions is "Grimaud-Arnoult"...

So, perhaps Maxwell wrote the part before 1930.
[According to "A History of the Occult Tarot" (by Decker & Dummett) , Maxwell already wrote an article about tarot ("Symblolisme des arcanes majeurs") in 1928 for the magazine "Le Voile d'Isis".]

Thanks for these informations Kenji.

BTW I have posted something about the 1970 edition of Marteaus book in the other thread.
I would be interested what is your opinion.

Brown Backs & Gilt Edging

I just noticed that on all the scans linked above,
"B. P. Grimaud Paris" is in book typface whilst on
my edition of this deck it appears in italic type...

Hello Fulgour,

how lucky you are to have obtained this deck :)
My copy has the minor Arcana only :(
And the copyright mark is the same as on Kenjis scans, so no italic but what you call book typface.

Enjoy this beautiful and so colorfull deck :)

Thanks :) Coredil! If there are any cards anyone would
like to see, I'd be happy to post a scan for them of it.

And what interesting notes in Kaplan Vol. II pg. 238...
République Française, Decret du 12 Avril... etc. ;)

I was noticing how on the Lequart-Arnoult by Grimaud
one edition has B.P.Grimaud Paris in italics and another
shows this in standard book typeface. Also, now I see,
the italic version actually overlaps the Le Bateleur and
it has me wondering, which edition was first published?

The edition with italic typeface also has "gilt" edging...
which suggests to me that it was the first one printed.
