Welcome to Aeclectic, cosmoline, 'Aeclectic' started out with more than Tarot, and progressively expanded this area so much as to have become synonymous with 'online tarot resource and discussion'! The word derives from a combination of 'altar' and 'eclectic', where eclectic come from the Greek 'eklektikos' that refers to selecting from various sources. 'Aeclectic' thus encourages presenting information about tarot from various sources, there to be presented upon its purple cloak for our discerning insights. Solandia, the owner and originator of the site, may have more to add, but basically, Aeclectic is there for all participants to, with care, offer their gifts for others to share and enjoy! Again, welcome. |

I did speak to umbrae earlier about decks. She mentioned the word Aleph being the fool or magician, depending on decks as I understand it. My question is where does the name Aleph come from. Also, when a deck is "openly labeled", what does this mean? I would ask Umbrae, since that is where I first heard it, but i`m sure Umbrae is still resting after that last long bit of info that was writen for me...lol I would appriciate it if you could help me with this. Thank you |

Aleph is the (latinized) word for the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet (alpha-bet, derived from "aleph" and "beth", the first 2 letters of the Hebrew alphabet); in Greek the term "aleph" means "first"; both in Greek and Hebrew kabbalah this first letter has many important meanings and correspondences. |

Hi cosmoline, Welcome to Aeclectic Tarot! I think there has been some misunderstanding about your question! In you're opening post, it seemed that you were introducing yourself and asking abou the origin of the word "Aeclectic"... hence the reason this thread was moved from the History section to the New Members section. Now it appears that you intended to ask about the origin of the word "Aleph", which is entirely different indeed! I'll let jmd decide which forum this belongs in.. it might very well be best suited to the Kabbalah & Alphabets section. Please forgive us if we seem to be jostling you around a bit! Regardless.. a big welcome to you, and.. (psst... Umbrae is rumored to be a man). best, robert __________________ Increasingly suspicious of the "system of soothing" and sensibly inclining toward the infinitely superior "system of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether". Yes Umbrae is a man, but it is confusing on here with gender at times. Someone thought I was male once, but nope I am female. I am happy we made you laugh!! Enjoy AT It's a diamond of a place
