Tarot Mosaics at the Chateau de Avenieres

Adam McLean

In a recent book by Genevieve Dubois 'Fulcanelli and
the alchemical revival' (originally in French as 'Fulcanelli devoile'),
she refers to a Chapel of the Tarot with mosaics
of the 22 Major arcana.

These were apparently constructed in the Chateau de
Avenieres at Cruseilles in France, by Assan Farid Dina, an
enthusiast for all things esoteric, who died in 1927.

These tarot mosaics do not seem to have survived,
and I cannot find any information about them from the
present Chateau de Avenieres, which is now an up-market
hotel.

Genevieve Dubois, includes a photograph of one of the
mosaics. You can see this here >

Does anyone have any information on this ?

Best wishes,

Ah! thankyou Adam - someone had mentioned to me in the 1980s that there was a Chateau near the Franco-Swiss-Italian border in which were supposedly large renditions of Atouts imagery, but had never managed to ever locate any source, and had dismissed it.

A book I shall have to get, and a lead that is certainly highly interesting!

Thank you for posting this. Remarkable and lovely mosaics, and quite a story. It just seems so hard to believe that no one would have tried to conserve them. But, such sad things have happened before.

wow, those are real nice. I wish the picture was a lot bigger though.

Oh wonderful! They may have survived - the photos are in colour and don't look all that old. Have you emailed to ask the current owners?

I have just received an email from the Château Des Avenières tio say that the Chapel with the tarot mosaics "still exists just as it used to be".

I am sure it will become a place of pilgrimage (like
the Tarot Garden) for tarot enthusiasts.

The castle looks nice too.

It's great, and at last I find a reason to visit France! Judging from the crocodile in the Fool, the tarot has something to do with Paul Christian. Very Interesting.
